Johnny Ray Steele, 51, of Sparta, passed away March 1, 2003, at White County Community Hospital.
Steele was born June 13, 1951, in Sparta, to Virgil and Mary Gaines Young Steele.
He had been a laborer.
Steele was preceded in death by his father; two sisters, Betty Williams and Oral Dean Steele; and one brother, James Steele.

James M. Passons, 88, of Sparta, passed away March 1, 2003, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Passons was born May 5, 1914, in White County, to James M. Passons and Ida Ora Haston Passons.
He was retired from Thomas Industries and had been a farmer.
Passons was preceded in death by his parents, James M. Passons and Ida Ora Haston Passons; his wife, Varina Mai Passons; and one son, Jim Passons.

Hickey appears in court Friday

Robbery suspect Tim Hickey appeared before Judge Sam Benningfield during White County General Sessions Court Friday. Hickey faces multiple criminal charges, including armed robbery and aggravated assault, resulting from his alleged gunpoint robbery of Sparta Discount Drugs on Feb. 24, 2003.
Before the mid-morning break, Hickey appeared as Benningfield questioned the suspect relative to his financial status. Hickey indicated that he had no assets or cash and that his vehicle was totaled in the incident. The newly formed Narcotics Unit within the White County Sheriff’s Department had a busy weekend to close out February.
In addition to serving multiple warrants, the team of three officers arrested 16 suspects on Saturday evening alone on drug and alcohol related charges.
Multiple arrests continued throughout the weekend.

Nannie Mae Rittenberry, 92, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 25, 2003, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Rittenberry was born March 27, 1910, in Sparta.
She was preceded in death by three sons, Franklin R. Rittenberry, George Estle Rittenberry and Mack Rittenberry.
Survivors include one daughters, Jewell McBride of Sparta; four sons and three sons-in-law, J.B. and Marie Rittenberry, Charles “Spider” Rittenberry, James and Betty Rittenberry and Jams and Geraldine Rittenberry all of Sparta; 16 grandchildren; and 20 great grandchildren.

Herbert Greene, 84, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 20, 2003, at Baptist DeKalb Hospital in Smithville.
Green was born April 8, 1918, in Hueysville, Ky., to William Greene Sr. and Arta Patton Greene.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a retired security officer and antique dealer.
