Leonard Paul Steele, 79, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 1, 2003, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Steele was born April 25, 1923, in White County, to Ben and Bertha Hicks Steele.
He had been employed with Ben Lomand Telephone as a lineman.
Steele was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Mary Ruth Roberts Steele of Sparta; one son, Paul Steele of Sparta; one daughter and son-in-law, Shirley and Jody Scott of Sparta; three sisters, Ova Vinson, Daisy Stone and Jane Graves all of Sparta; and four grandchildren, Bryan Steele, Laura Steele, Shelly Fuller and Kyle Scott.

Alvaree Holland, 80, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 4, 2003, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Holland was born Nov. 13, 1922, in White County, to Harvey Edgar Harris and Katherine Elrod Harris.
She was a member of Shiloh Church of God of Prophecy and had
worked in the sewing department of the garment industry.
Holland was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Charles Monroe Holland; one sister, Donavee Puckett; and one brother, Darnell Harris.

Mary Jane Leech, 62, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 3, 2003.
Leech attended a Baptist Church and had been employed as an E-911 dispatcher for White County.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William T. and Myrtie L. Porter Lee and one step son, Steven Leech.
Survivors include her husband, Hayes Leech of Sparta; one son, Jimmy Cates of Smithville; five grandchildren, Betsy and Rebecca Cates both of Smithville, and Michelle, Veronica and Steven Leech all of North Carolina; one brother, William T. Lee Jr. of Tullahoma; and one sister, Wanella Engleburger of Tullahoma.

Price was born Nov. 10, 1937, in
White County, to Willie Arvil and Susan Frances Hudson Price.
He was retired from Red Kap Industries.
Price was preceded in death by his parents.
Survivors include his wife, Ann Geer Price of Sparta; one daughter, Susan Lewis of Sparta; one sister and brother-in-law, Reba and Levie Waldie of Cookeville; two grandsons, Brad Lewis and Michael Lewis both of Cookeville; and one nephew and wife, Darrell and Nancy Davis of Fort Payne, Ala.

Daniel Andrew Taylor, 45, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 4. 2003.
Taylor was born Jan. 8, 1957, in Oak Ridge, to Dr. Henry D. and Elizabeth Ashburn Taylor.
He had been a librarian.
Taylor was preceded in death by his father.
Survivors include his wife, Cathy McCord Taylor of Doyle; mother, Elizabeth Taylor of Fairfield Glade; one brother, John Taylor of Oak Ridge; one niece Erin Savage of Doyle; and one god son, Joseph Daniel Youorski of Sugar Hill, Ga.

David Caige and Kalei Paige were born Dec. 29, 2002, in McMinnville, to Christopher David Hastings and Dana Nicole Yates.
Survivors include their parents, David Hastings and Dana Yates both of Spencer; four sisters, Ashley Hastings and Kelci Hastings both of McMinnville and Chelsey Sullivan and Johnna Sullivan both of Spencer; grandparents, Jackie and Helen Hastings and Donna and Terry Narramore all of Spencer and Vonette Hastings of Winchester; and great grandparents, Emory and Louise Hastings and James and Morine Yates all of Spencer and Dorothy Lightfoot of Winchester.

Curtis White, 72, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 2, 2003.
White was born March 18, 1930, in
White County, to John White and Flossie Jaquass White.
He was a member Central Church of Christ, where he served as an elder. White also served in the Korean Conflict and had worked in tool and die at Mallory Timers.
White was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, John Dalton White and William “Bill” White; and one sister, Ruby Simpson.

New Year’s Day rings in problems for local residents

While most White Countians were preparing to celebrate the new year, several residents were experiencing their own share of problems.
The year 2003 started out on a less than positive note for Paul Ryan, of Sparta, as his residence was heavily damaged by fire. Sparta Fire Department received a call from E-911 about an alleged explosion and smoke on Gracy Heights.
According to Sparta Fire Chief Ed Kay, the firefighters found on arrival a structure fire at 130 Gracy Heights. However, the noise that had been identified as an explosion was determined to be the sound of wires shorting out as a result of the … CONTINUED


City sends message to local beer sellers

During the first meeting of the new year, the Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen sent a message to local businesses that sell beer to minors. The board fined five businesses that had been found guilty in city court of selling beer to minors.
“We are not going to allow anyone to sell beer to a minor, period,” Mayor Tommy Pedigo warned the business owners present at the hearing.
Officially acting as the beer board, the city board had the option of revoking the beer permits, suspending them for up to one year, or levying a fine of up to $1,500 for the violations.

Gunman robs Sparta Discount Drugs

With his weapon drawn, a lone gunman entered the front doors of Sparta Discount Drugs at approximately 5 p.m., Jan. 2, 2003. The individual demanded two different types of drugs, hydrocodone and oxycodone, both narcotics prescribed to treat moderate to moderately-severe pain.
The pharmacists threw the gunman three, 500-count bottles of hydrocodone, and he left the scene. In and out in less than 1.5 minutes, the gunman drove away in a white car, leaving no possible identification marks.
Harold Blankenship, investigator for the Sparta Police Department, has been assigned for further investigation.
