Increase in sales and use tax put to public referendum for City of Sparta

If a city referendum is successful, then everyone who spends money within the City of Sparta can expect to take more money from their wallets for an additional amount in sales and use tax.

Sparta Mayor and Board of Aldermen has voted to approve an ordinance that would increase sales and use tax in the city of Sparta and to request a public referendum on that same ordinance.

The rate would increase from 2.25 to 2.75 percent, if approved.

Casey announces 247th pick of the NFL draft

Jordan Casey, a unified athlete at White County High School, was chosen to announce the 247th pick in this year’s NFL draft, which was held in Nashville.

The 16-year-old was chosen to announce a pick in the seventh round of the draft after he had traveled to San Diego, California, earlier this year as one of White County High School’s representatives at the Unified Champion School Conference.

“Jordan is a natural leader,” Karen Benningfield, one of Casey’s teachers, said about why he was chosen as one of the school’s representatives for the conference. “Kids come to him when they need advice.”

Mary Lucille Burgess

Mary Lucille Burgess, 73, of Crossville, passed away May 2, 2019, at Cumberland Medical Center, in Crossville.

She was born June 11, 1945, in Crossville, the daughter of L.D. Randolph and Ruby Anderson Randolph.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m., May 11, 2019, at Smith’s Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, in Pleasant Hill.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
