Sparta’s 10 and under Little League pitching machine All Star team continued their tournament play with pool play games on Friday and Saturday and came away with a split.
After having a game rained out on Thursday, they defeated Lebanon 12-2 on Friday. Things didn’t go as well on Saturday as they fell to Smith County Red 11-9.
Sparta jumped out to the early lead on Friday with five runs in the first inning. Hayden Farris got things started with a double. Matthew Brock followed with a triple. Jacob Sparks plated Brock with his triple. Cameron Carter also tripled driving in Sparks. Grant Slatten singled. Cade Clark singled in a pair of runs.
Lebanon plated one run in their half of the first. The only other run Lebanon would score came in the fourth when the lead off batter reached on an error and would later come around to score.
Sparta added two runs in the third. Brock reached on an error and was driven in by a Carter triple. C.J. Nichols reached on an error that plated Carter.
In the fourth, Sparta put five runs on the board that would give them the mercy rule victory. Drake Williamson and Clayton Gilbert both reached on errors. Isaac Miller’s fielder’s choice drove in one run and then Joseph Nelson knocked in the second run. Hayden Farris reached safely as did Brock, who drove in a run. Sparta knocked in Farris and Carter plated Brock.
Sparta found themselves facing an early deficit in Saturday’s game when Smith Red put four runs on the board in the first inning. The first four batters for Carthage scored. Sparta got one of those runs back in their half of the inning when Brock singled and was driven in by Sparks.
The second inning was scoreless although Kade Clark did single for Sparta. Smith County also failed to score in the third and Sparta rallied with five runs to take the advantage.
Clayton Gilbert got it stated with an infield single. Miller reached on an error. Tucker Nash reached on an error that drove in Gilbert. A Joseph Nelson double drove in Miller. Farris tripled driving in Nash and Nelson. Brock sacrificed in Farris. That pushed Sparta out to the 6-4 lead. Sparks would double, but was left stranded.
The fourth was another scoreless inning for both teams.
Carthage plated four runs in the top of the fifth to push out to the 8-6 advantage. Sparta retook the lead with three runs in the bottom of the frame.
Drake Williamson led off with a single, but was erased on a fielder’s choice by Gilbert. Miller followed with a single putting two on base. Nash drove in one run and Nelson plated two runs.
In the top of the sixth, an error and a pair of hits by Carthage led to three runs, which put them up 11-9.
The bottom of the inning saw promise for Sparta as Sparks led off with a double and Grant Slatten singled putting the tying runs at the corners with one out. They would both be left stranded on a strikeout and a ground ball as Carthage escaped with the 11-9 win.
Sparta is now 2-1 in pool play with two games remaining. They play again on Monday and will then make up their rain out game Wednesday. The top two from pool play advance on to next weekend. That tournament will also be played in Carthage.
