Zakk Sherman, 13, an eighth grader at White County Middle School, is a student at Bushido Karate Center, in Sparta, and a previous competitor for Team USA Karate.
In 2016, Zakk competed in the World Championships, in Florida, earning three bronze medals for Team USA. A new opportunity has presented itself to Zakk to compete in the World Championships for a second time.
Any parent with children involved in sports knows it is not cheap. This goes for karate as well. Team sports have been known to benefit children socially and intellectually as well as physical. Zakk has been practicing karate since he was 7 years old and has earned a place in the World Championships in Martial Arts taking place in Athens, Greece, in September. However, to get him there financially, he is asking for the help of his fellow Spartans. It is because of this that his father, Sean Sherman, approached Calfkiller Brewing Company and other organizations for help in planning a 10K race to raise money for the trip.
“Everyone does a 5K,” said Sean Sherman. “We wanted this race to be as unique an event as Zakk is a person.”
The Calfkiller 10K, or the Calfkiller Crawl, will start at 8 a.m., Sept. 29, on the corner of Rhea Street and Main Street, in downtown Sparta. Participants will follow the Calfkiller River to the front door of Calfkiller Brewing Company, at 1839 Blue Springs Rd. Once there, Calfkiller Brewing Company representatives will offer a tour of the facility to the participants, and anyone 21 years old and older are welcome to sample various beers. Runners and bikers in the race will also receive a limited edition, dry-fit, Calfkiller Crawl t-shirt at the brewery. If participants decide not to finish the race and to stay at the brewery, there will be a shuttle available to drive them back to the start/finish line.
“We wanted to make it a fun, hybrid event,” said Sean Sherman. “If they want to run, walk, ride a bike, quite honestly, if they want to show up in a golf cart, we don’t care.”
Participants can register for $35 in advance or $40 on the day of the race. Registration forms can be picked up and dropped off at Calfkiller Brewing Company, Sparta YMCA, Calfkiller CrossFit, or on Facebook under key words 2018 Calfkiller Crawl. Registrations can also be mailed to the Sherman family, at 523 Oakland Dr., Sparta, TN 38583. Participants wanting to pay their fees electronically can use PayPal, sending to user name firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Calfkiller Crawl, in September, is an inaugural event. According to Sean Sherman, in the future, it will be a venue to raise money for different local charities.
“We are kind of on our own with this,” said Sean Sherman. “He does go to Bushido Karate, but this is something he is independently raising money for.”
