Robert ”Sarge” Douglas Roberts

Robert ”Sarge” Douglas Roberts, 87, of Sparta, passed away May 16, 2017, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Mr. Roberts was born Feb. 28, 1930, in Sparta, to William Vance Roberts and Minnie Alice Smith Roberts.

He served his country in the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam Conflict. Mr. Roberts retired from the U.S. Army after serving more than 26 years.

In service to his country, his accomplishments included National Defense Service Medal-w/OLC, Good Conduct Medal 8th Award, Distinguished Service Cross Medal, Purple Heart 3d OLC, Silver Star, United Nations Service Medal, Master Parachutist Badge, Vietnam Service Medal with 4 BRONZE STARS, Korean Service Medal with 1 Silver Star, Combat Infantryman Badge 2d Award, Bronze Star Medal w/OLC, Army Commendation Medal w/OLC, 6 Overseas Service Bars, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal w/1960 Device, Pathfinder Badge, and a member of the Legion of Valor.

Mr. Roberts was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 62 years, Betty Rae Roberts; brothers and sisters, Beulah Mae, Vera Lee, Jessie Edwina, Margaret Rae, O.V., Mamie Christine, Mary Dibrell, William Carl, Betty Ronea, Lella Jean, Vivian Allison, Richard Lavaughn, Brenda Lou, Lequita Joy and Ruby Nell.

Survivors include children, Robert Steven Roberts and wife Rethia, Dennis Lynn Roberts and wife Deborah, Sally Ann Shockley and husband Thomas Wayne Shockley, Wendy Marie and husband Gene Wagner, David Lee Roberts and wife Patsy; brother, J.V. Roberts and wife Jean; sister, Linda Sue McGinnis; sister-in-law, Johnnie Roberts; 11 grandchildren, Heather Roberts, Jeffery Roberts and wife Alicia, Jacob Roberts and wife Fallon, Caleb Roberts, Haley Roberts, Jonathan Roberts, Laura Sue Dyer and husband Jared, Daniel Shockley and wife Bobbie, Sarah Reece, Becky Sue Shockley, Josh Roberts; 12 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and numerous nieces and nephews from Tennessee, Alabama, California, Alaska and Pennsylvania.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., May 20, 2017, at East Sparta Church of God, with burial in Turner-Roberts Cemetery. Bishop Charles Dodson and retired Lt. Col. Bardon Blizzard will officiate. The family will receive friends 4-8 p.m., May 19, at the church.

Pallbearers will be Jacob Roberts, Caleb Roberts, Kayne Tollison, Jeffery Roberts, Jonathan Roberts and Daniel Shockley.

Thurman Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
