Hats off to two White Countians being honored in this year’s Christmas parade by The Rotary Club of Sparta.   The two honorees recently chosen by the club to represent them and Sparta in the parade and throughout the year are Alan Marsh and William Bohannon.

Each year, one person from each county is selected as the Rotarian of The Year, and this year the Rotary Club selected Alan Marsh. Recipients of this award exemplify the meaning of Rotary’s motto “service above self,” and Marsh has certainly walked that out in his life.

At the age of 24, Marsh joined Rotary Club and has been contributing to his community ever since. Through the years, Marsh has been involved in foreign exchange programs and service projects, both locally and internationally. He has served many roles in the Rotary Club and participated faithfully with many projects.   Being a Rotarian is more than just being a member of a club. Rather, a Rotarian helps the clubs achieve its goals, acts with high ethical standards, and participates in the club’s community projects. Marsh has proven that he puts service above himself, and for that our community should be thankful.

This year, William Bohannon has been chosen to be grand marshal of the Christmas Parade. Bohannon, who was raised in Sparta, turned 95 this April. He is the proud father of three children: Bill, Judy, and Wesley, and grandfather to Alan, Nora, Dana, Kristi, and Melissa. A grand marshal is an honorary title usually given to someone who is known as a “cultural hero,” which is a great way to describe Bohannon.

He was one of the many brave soldiers to risk his life for America’s freedom during World War II. He was stationed all over the world, including France, Australia, and many other places around the globe, so that Americans everywhere could live the best life possible. For that, we all owe Bohannon and soldiers everywhere a huge thank you for all they do for this country. Currently, Bohannon remains an active member of White County who participates in various civic and community events.

What is Rotary? Through Rotary clubs, people from all over the world come together to exchange ideas, form professional connections, and make a difference. The Rotary Club of Sparta serves its community in many ways, not the least of which is sponsoring the annual Christmas parade.

Sparta Rotary President-Elect Cathy Farley commented, “The Sparta Rotary Christmas Parade brings together the best of the Rotary Club and the community. Alan Marsh exemplifies the best of the Sparta Rotary Club, and William Bohannon shows the best our community has to offer. We are thrilled to honor these men and hope you will join us at the parade on Saturday.”
