Russell Edward Smith

Russell Edward Smith, 91, of Sparta, passed away March 6, 2018, at Saint Thomas West Hospital, in Nashville.

Mr. Smith was born June 7, 1926, in Marion, Indiana, the son of Oliver Smith and Laura Mae Sander Smith.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in World War II, and was honorably discharged, in November 1945. Mr. Smith was active in camping, fishing, hiking, and traveling. He enjoyed watching sports, especially tennis and football. Mr. Smith was an avid Green Bay Packers fan.

He was preceded in death his parents; sons, Robert Smith, Robert (Kathy) Hendricks; and siblings, Guy, William, Wayne, Kathryn, Nancy, Martha, Ellen, Susie, Clara, and Roberta.

Survivors include a son, Russell Smith, of Sparta; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many dear friends in the Sparta area, including a very special friend, Bernice Bumbalough.

Funeral service will be noon, March 8, 2018, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Oak Lawn Cemetery, with full military honors provided by the Veterans’ Honor Guard. Bro. Jamie McCormick will officiate. The family will receive friends 10 a.m.-noon, March 8, at the funeral home.

Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
