Ruth Sparks Hale

Ruth Sparks Hale, 97, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 31, 2017, at Life Care Center of Sparta.

Born Sept. 2, 1920, in White County, she was the daughter of Joseph Z. Sparks and Mary Fanny Stewart Sparks.

A beloved matriarch for many in the Blue Springs community, she taught Sunday School at Blue Springs Presbyterian Church for several decades and volunteered at the hospital, in Sparta, for 17 years. While her children were in school, she worked (left-handed) as a seamstress at the Sparta Shirt Factory. She was most proud of being a loving housewife, mother, and grandmother. Her great-grandchildren called her “Yaya.”

In passing, she joins her husband, James Russell Hale; her parents; all her brothers and sisters; and her granddaughter, Robin Hopkins Huffine.

Her surviving family includes son, S. Russell (Elizabeth) Hale; grandsons, Ryan R. (Janelle) Hale, of White House, S. Eric (Angie) Hale, of Sparta, J. Reed (Charity) Hale, of Sacramento, California; great-grandchildren, Samuel, Phoebe, Abigail Hale, of Sparta; daughter, Janice Elaine Hale (Gary) Sparks, of Sunset, South Carolina; granddaughter, Jennipher Hopkins (Wayne) Isley, of Snow Camp, North Carolina; great-grandchildren, Holly and Holden Huffine, of Haw River, North Carolina; nephew, Frank Curtis (Rama) Howard, of Cookeville; and nieces, Jonelda Sparks Hutson (Bobby), Opal Sparks Oliver, and Willie Mae Sparks Sparkman, all of Sparta.

Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Nov. 4, 2017, at Blue Springs Presbyterian Church, on Doran Road, in White County, with burial in the church cemetery. Jonathan Angel will conduct the service, with eulogy and memories by family members. The Ryan and Robin Sparkman family will provide the music.

Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Nov. 3, at Hunter Funeral Home, and 10-11 a.m., Nov. 4, at the church.

Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
