On Aug. 27, 2018, Life Care Centers of America recognized the contributions of volunteer J.R. Horton during the company’s annual management meeting awards dinner at its headquarters, in Cleveland, Tennessee.
Twelve-year-old Horton received Life Care’s Youth Volunteer of the Year Award. This honor is presented to one young person each year for extraordinary volunteer service.
Horton helps with activities from bingo to arts and crafts, helps transport residents to and fro throughout the building, delivers magazines to residents who want them, prays with residents, and sings to them. He even assists with maintenance.
Horton does all this even while his mother is a resident at the facility and he is being raised by his father.
“I just have to thank you all so much,” said Horton. “It’s fun to volunteer. It’s been such an honor to work with these fine people, and they are just so nice and care for the residents. I love them very much, and they are like brothers and sisters to me.”
“You can tell with his personality that he’s just a positive influence,” said Marshal Huddleston, executive director at Life Care Center of Sparta.
“What a joy it is to have J.R. come to our building every day with such an upbeat attitude,” said Pam Green, assistant director of nursing. “He doesn’t let anything get him down. He’s just a ray of sunshine to everyone he meets.”
“J.R. Horton is an amazing young man,” said Beecher Hunter, Life Care president. “He represents the best of our up-and-coming generations with a heart for people and a commitment to serve. He is an inspiration to me and many others.”
The Youth Volunteer Award is presented annually to a volunteer age 18 or younger. Nominations from every region and division of Life Care are considered. Criteria include contributing a significant amount of time to a specific activity or service, initiating a new program or activity, serving as an excellent example for other individual youth or youth groups, and producing positive changes through the volunteer activity or service.
Life Care Center of Sparta is located at 508 Mose Dr.
