Top. L-R: Melissa Kell, of Sparta, Livingston Huddle House manager; Trey Ziegler, director of training; and Larry and Betty Fulkerson, franchisees.

A dedicated White County husband and wife entrepreneurial team recently broke all the barriers by receiving Huddle House’s “Best of Best” and “Operator of the Year” awards at the 2009 National Convention.
Despite the economic conditions stifling growth and prosperity for many small businesses around the country, Larry and Betty Fulkerson along with their team, achieved two awards for their triumphant success in their Livingston store.
After six years of joining on as Huddle House franchisees, the Fulkersons own three locations in Middle Tennessee, including Sparta, Livingston and Baxter. As 40-year restaurant veterans, the Fulkersons joined the Huddle House family more than 15 years ago working at the corporate office helping franchisees like themselves own their very own business.
“My wife and I always dreamed of owning our own business,” said Larry. “But after working with Huddle House’s franchisees throughout the Southeast and experiencing the brand first-hand, we knew that we found the perfect match.”
After making it to the finals as Division Champions last year with their Sparta store, they came back this year ready to compete and were awarded the gold “Best of Best” medal for their Livingston store. “Best of the Best” is an award based on an intensive evaluation by Huddle House corporate, including factors such as customer service, procedures and policies, cleanliness, customer satisfaction, as well as mystery shoppers’ experiences. On top of receiving the “Best of Best” award, they also received “Operator of the Year” award, which is the highest annual honor a Huddle House franchisee can receive, as it recognizes leadership, service sales and revenue, customer recognition and outstanding service throughout all their stores overall.
“Being able to take these awards home to our employees and customers is a true testament to the hard work and devotion to our communities,” said Betty. “With many employees being with us from the very start, we have come to think of our employees as family, which I feel has really strengthened our presence in the community.”
“The best thing about our business is getting to meet all of our loyal customers and have the ability to offer them exceptional customer service,” said Larry. “We are already preparing for next year.”
