Spencer Fire and Rescue recently announced that after receiving federal grant funding through the Assistance to Firefighters Grant Program, the department has been able to obtain 10 new sets of personal protective equipment and four new self-contained breathing apparatuses.

This new gear comes at an opportune time, as the department’s SCBA devices had expired late in 2017, and the last time the department had new turnouts was almost 20 years ago.

“This new gear represents the changes we are undertaking in the department,” said Chief Chris T. Russell. “We want to operate as a professional fire prevention service organization for the citizens of Spencer and Van Buren County.”

Russell adds that the department’s top priority right now involves continuing to make changes to have the Insurance Service Office rating re-evaluated and lowered. A lower ISO rating will translate into significant savings for home and business owners.

Spencer Fire and Rescue has expressed thanks to the Federal Emergency Management Agency for the grant money that made these purchases possible, as well as the residents of Spencer and Van Buren County for their continued support.

If anyone has questions about fire suppression or fire prevention services, call the department at (931) 946-2332.
