It’s back to school time again and that also means sales tax holiday weekend.
Every year Tennessee sets aside three days where certain items will be tax free for the duration of an entire weekend. Like all offers, there are regulations. Qualifying items include clothing that is $100 or less, school supplies and school art supplies that are $100 or less, and computers that are $1,500 or less. Other items that are considered non-essential to going back to school are not tax exempt. These items include jewelry, handbags, and sports and recreational equipment. Stores in Sparta do different things to get ready for the tax-exempt weekend and are ready for it to happen. One of those stores is Factory Connection.
“We set up for the blue jean sale, and we have a lot of stuff marked down,” said Michelle Lee, Factory Connection manager. “We don’t even do a price limit either. They say there is some kind of limit as far as how much you spend. You can buy $300 worth of stuff or $10 worth of stuff, you still get it tax free.”
This year the tax-free weekend will start at 12:01 a.m., July 27, and will continue through 11:59 p.m., July 29. For more information about items that fall under the tax exempt status visit the website www.tn.gov/revenue/taxes/sales-and-use-tax/sales-tax-holiday.html
