Do you want to have a positive impact on tomorrow, the younger generation? Legacies are built on how we live our lives. Our capacity to influence others hinges on your ability to be trusted over time. It takes only seconds for a truthful reputation to be destroyed by actions or words of dishonesty. In “The Day America Told the Truth” we are told 91 percent of us lie regularly and one in five cannot make it throughout a single day without lying. We seem to be a lying culture that is getting worse. This last election cycle has made it clear that the mainstream media, the major political parties and the candidates can lie without any real conscience. Giving them Play-Doh, coloring books and a safe place as a young adult to avoid accepting the truthful results of an election is teaching them falsely.
God’s Word has a lot to say about lying, and Proverbs 6:16-19 includes it in a list of things God hates: There are six things the Lord hates—no, seven things he detests: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that kill the innocent, a heart that plots evil, feet that race to do wrong, a false witness who pours out lies, a person who sows discord among brothers. If God hates these seven things, we as believers should strive to be the exact opposite so this world can know truth is a real virtue. Did you notice three of these seven things are closely associated with the ninth commandment: a lying tongue, a false witness who pours out lies, and a person who sows discord among the brothers. From this, along with the command not to testify falsely against our neighbor, it is obvious that God hates liars and lying. Are these areas you struggle with in your life?
In this past election, we saw all seven of these things on the line that God hates. Christian, are you a person that still values integrity to a point you will not be loyal to a political party or personal financial gain over the truth? The children are watching, listening and learning the value of integrity. Those of us who are believers in Christ know that it is impossible for God to lie – Hebrews 6:18 tells us.
God hates lies and liars we are told in Proverbs 6. Satan is described as “the father of lies” in John 8:44. This is so simple for a true Christian to understand; when we lie we are behaving more like children of the devil than children of God. Our children are seeing many Christians living with partial integrity, and we cannot expect God’s best blessing without our best in return. We are always battling against temptation and sin as children of God. For us to avoid the enemy’s pitfalls, we need to earnestly seek truth. Solomon tells us in Proverbs 23:23, “Buy the truth, and don’t sell it.” Though seeking truth may involve some sacrifices, it is the most worthwhile pursuit you can embark on because, once obtained, it is one of your most valuable assets. We must teach our children to invest in being truthful.
In a world of lies, we must pray to be led in all truth and to put on the “belt of truth” mentioned in Ephesians 6:14 as a part of the armor of God. By endeavoring to walk in truth, God will help keep you from being deceived and led astray by the devil’s tactics and traps. If you fill your heart with truth by reading God’s Word on a daily basis and praying for His wisdom, when you encounter a compromising position, you will be more able to respond ethically and honestly. Train yourself and the children to be able to distinguish good from evil in such a way your reputation is one of integrity.
Integrity, honesty, truth is the biblical foundation on which to build your life that Satan hates and God loves. It is the only stable force capable of withstanding the pressures of this world, for truth always prevails. Operating in a spirit of deception always leads to dissension, disappointment, and destruction, whereas living a life of truth produces peace, purpose and fulfillment. Ask God today to help you be a person of integrity! Remember, we are touching tomorrow today with truth.
