Tennessee Tech’s dedication to community service will be on display during the Blue Cross Bowl games being held today, Friday and Saturday at Tucker Stadium.

With three high school football championship games being played each day, the need for volunteers to step up and help with parking, ticket and program sales and anything else that may go along with game prep is essential to the success of the three-day event.

For Tech, it’s a chance to participate in something that is happening on campus. Michelle Huddleston, the assistant director for Tech’s service learning center, says that more than 400 of the approximate 850 volunteer spots are typically filled by Tech affiliates with about 80 percent of those being students.

“A lot of faculty, staff and students turn out and volunteer for this event,” Huddleston said. “Several scholarship students who have service hours will save those hours and use them during this event.”

Tech’s athletics department will also put in a lot of hours over the next three days. Matt Dexter, the assistant athletics director for external affairs, has been working diligently on setting up the stadium and surrounding area. He, and several members of the athletic facilities staff, will be on hand during all nine games to assist in whatever needs to be done.

“We love doing this,” Dexter said. “It’s part of what we do. We love being part of the community and giving back to the community.”

The Blue Cross Bowl games will be held at 11 a.m., 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. each of the three days, which is different than years past when only two games were played on Thursday.

“We are a well-oiled machine. We look to improve things each year,” Dexter said. “It’s been tricky with an extra game, but we are making the necessary adjustments and moving forward.”
