The Right Stuff – by Donald Holman

As the week wraps up, even more light has been shown on the activities of the Obama administration and the Hillary campaign and their attempts to undermine the duly elected president of the United States. It is hard to recap it all in one column, so I will attempt to hit the highlights.

We learned from last week’s memo that the Department of Justice and the FBI were heavily involved in improper and probably illegal activities to first damage the campaign of Donald J. Trump and then undermine his presidency. But this last week has seen the addition of other agencies of the government. Two things this week have been revealed. Jonathon Winer admitted he was involved in trafficking information on then-candidate Trump last fall, shortly before the election. And in a related matter, another agency of the federal government, the CIA, was found to have paid $100,000 to a Russian agent for dirt on Trump that they suspected was false and subsequently terminated the arrangement.

So…let’s see…the FBI, the CIA, the DOJ and the State Department of Barack Obama have all been caught colluding with various elements of the Russian government to try and damage candidate Trump and then destroy President Trump.

And Congress, not to be left behind, had two of its members, Congressman Adam Schiff and Senator Mark Warner, both Democrats, implicated in attempts to either collude with or accomplish some form of contact with Russian agents or people they thought were Russian agents. Whadda week!

This MIGHT explain the results of an IBD/TPP poll published this weekend. A clear majority of 55 percent believe it is “likely” that the Obama administration “improperly surveilled the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.” That includes 31 percent of Democrats, 87 percent of Republicans, and 55 percent of Independents.

A clear majority of 54 percent want a special counsel to investigate “whether the FBI and the Department of Justice improperly surveilled the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election.” Only 44 percent disagreed. The partisan breakdown shows that 74 percent of Republicans and 50 percent of Independents want a special counsel, as do a full 44 percent of Democrats. But wait…there’s more!

A newly released Rasmussen poll shows that a full 50 percent of Americans “believe it’s at least somewhat likely senior federal law enforcement officials broke the law in an effort to prevent Donald Trump from winning the presidency.” Only 40 percent disagree. What is striking about these results is we all know and have seen the mainstream news organizations working overtime to hide these truths from the American people. Their efforts are exactly what President Trump meant when he said the press has become the enemy of our democracy. A democracy depends on a press that is not only free but also fair. But, the American people are onto their game! And I find it very comforting that large percentages of Democrats believe these things as well.

Finally, to keep the facts discussed on this page correct, let me offer two or three basics. I read here about Republicans wanting to “deregulate the banks.” We had a president named Bill Clinton (D) who, on Nov. 12, 1999, repealed the Glass-Steagall Act of 1933. The Glass-Steagall Act separated commercial and investment banking for seven decades. Its repeal was one of the causes of the banking crisis, along with some other actions by Clinton and Jimmy Carter. So, when you hear talk of bank deregulation, remember that. And the completely dysfunctional Dodd-Frank Act worsened the problem it was pretending to solve. More on that in another column. Second myth buster – the Republicans cutting Social Security. You may remember Al Gore looking everywhere for that “lockbox” Social Security was kept in. Sorry. Another Democrat Named Lyndon Baines Johnson busted that open with a Democrat controlled House and Senate, in 1968. And just so we have it all straight, it was the Democrat Party, with our home grown “hero” AL Gore, casting the tie-breaking vote to discontinue allowing Social Security payments to be subtracted from your income taxes! For bonus points, who passed the idea of allowing immigrants that come here from other countries to draw Social Security? Our old buddy Jimmy Carter! Until next week, keep it between the ditches!
