Transfer of property for new Findlay Elementary is officially finalized

As construction crews continue to make headway in a project that will produce a new facility for Findlay Elementary, the school board finalized one of the last pieces of the project by approving the transfer of property between the school system and the county government.

On May 10, 2018, the White County Board of Education held its monthly meeting to discuss several items on the agenda ranging from teacher tenure, volunteer coaches, and the transfer of property.

Findlay Elementary School has been selected by the White County school system to receive a new state-of-the-art facility, as their existing building had been previously deemed inadequate for the needs of the school.

On Feb. 27, 2017, Kurt Dronebarger, White County director of schools, gave a presentation to the White County Board of Commissioners about the school system’s intent on constructing a new 70,000 square foot elementary school to replace the existing Findlay school building that was constructed in 1966.

Since that presentation was given, in 2017, the school system has made continued progress toward moving forward with the construction of the school, which is slated to be completed by July 2019. This new building is being constructed on county owned property, on Hale Street, that is adjacent to the existing Findlay facility.

To build the new facility at its existing location, a land/property swap agreement had to be made between the county government and the school system. The property that was tentatively agreed upon and considered during the May 10, 2018, school board meeting was:

-560 Hale Street (new Findlay site transferred from the county to the school system effective immediately)

-117 South Main Street (4-H building transferred from the school system to the county effective July 1, 2018)

Following a brief discussion about the properties that were in need of being transferred, the school board voted unanimously to approve the property/land transfers.

Other items of business included:

-Approving volunteer coaches Mark Frasier, Michael Slone, J.J. Morris, Terry Green, and Jacob Sparkman for middle school football and Greg Seagraves for high school football

-Approved teacher tenure for 26 teachers across eight schools

-Review of reports from the various committees

-Retirement recognition for Bobbi Duncan

-Approval of budget amendments for Funds 142, 431, 432 and Fund 141 to 177

-Discussion on budget updates for non-revenue sports

The White County Board of Education will have its next regularly scheduled monthly meeting at 5:30 p.m., June 14, 2018, at the board of education building, on Baker Street.
