Van Buren High School teams sweep Whitwell

On Tuesday night, the Van Buren County High School basketball teams hosted Whitwell in a key District 5A matchup. Going into the game, the Eaglettes trailed the Whitewell Lady Tigers by one game in the district standings, but the Eaglettes would use a big first half and would hold on late to pick up a 51-45 win over the Lady Tigers and put themselves in a tie for first place in the District.

In the boys’ game, the Eagles used a big first half to put away the Tigers, but something bigger happened, on Tuesday night, besides the Eagles 89-37 win. Senior and Tennessee Tech signee Caden Mills did something that only 21 other high school basketball players in the history of Tennessee high school basketball have ever done. In the third quarter of Tuesday night’s game, Mills reached the 3,000 career point mark. Mills, over his career at VBHS, has helped lead the Eagles to three district titles, three region titles, and three state tournament appearances. Now Mills can add scoring 3,000 points to his resume.

In the first game of the night, the Eaglettes jumped out to a 19-12 lead over the Tigers at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Eaglettes added to their lead, outscoring Whitwell 12-6 in the quarter and lead 31-18 at the half. After halftime, the Tigers came out in the third quarter and outscored the Eaglettes 14-8 in the quarter and cut the Eaglettes’ lead to 39-32 heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Eaglettes were outscored 13-12 in the quarter but held on late, winning by a final score of 51-45.

Mallory Christian led the Eaglettes with 27 points. Emma Scoggins and Desarai Baker chipped in 8 points. Hannah Sullivan and Lily Fredricks added 3 points, and Chloe Ragland rounded out the Eaglettes’ scoring with 2 points.

In the nightcap, the Eagles jumped out to an early 28-9 lead on the Tigers.

In the second quarter, the Eagles didn’t slow down their offensive attack, outscoring Whitwell 26-11 in the quarter, and the Eagles would   take a 54-20 lead into the locker room.

In the second half, the Eagles would outscore Whitwell 35-17 on their way to an 89-37 win.

Mills led all scorers with 31 points, and Bo Walker chipped in 10 points. Other scorers were, Logan Young (9), Jacob Guy (8), Sawyer Shockley (6), Hootie Huerta (6), Jared Binkley (4), Dillion Young (4), Hunter Evans (4), Dakota Simmons (3), Jacob Crain (2), and Axel Rodriguez (2).

With the wins, the Eaglettes move to 9-16 on the season and 4-1 in district play, and the Eagles sit at 20-5 on the season and 5-0 in district play. The Eagles also picked up their 40th straight district win, on Tuesday night. The Eagles and Eaglettes will close out their week with back-to-back games, on Thursday nigh and Friday night. On Thursday night, VBHS will travel to Monterey High School. On Friday night, the Eagles and Eaglettes will play host to Clay County. On Thursday night, the Eagles will face-off against the top team from District 6A. This game will have some Region Tournament implications, as both teams could meet in the Region Tournament. On Friday night, the Eagles will face the second-best team in District 6A. On Friday night, the Eaglettes will be facing the third best team in District 6A. Both the Eagles and Eaglettes will have some tough games to close out their week.
