VBHS splits with Clay County

The Van Buren County High School basketball teams traveled to Clay County High School, on Nov. 21, to take on the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs.

The Eaglettes were first to take the court against the Lady Bulldogs. The Eaglettes got behind early and couldn’t ever make a comeback, losing 74-52.

In the nightcap, the Eagles trailed the Bulldogs 42-27 at the half, but would outscore Clay County 53-23 in the second half and would prevail 80-67 over Clay County.

In the first game of the night, the Eaglettes trailed Clay County 20-8 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, The Eaglettes cut into the Lady Bulldogs lead, outscoring them 19-12 in the quarter but still trailed heading into the locker room 32-27.

In the second half, the Eaglettes would be outscored 42-25 and would fall to the Lady Bulldogs 74-52.

Mallory Christian led the Eaglettes with 14 points. Hannah Sullivan chipped in 11 points, and Mika Davis added 9 points. Kinzie Johnson finished with 6 points, and Lily Fredricks added 4 points. Annaston McBride added 3 points, and Emma Scoggins rounded out the scoring with 2 points.

In the nightcap, The Eagles fell behind early, trailing 17-14 at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs would expand their lead, outscoring the Eagles 25-13 in the quarter and would take a 42-27 lead into the locker room.

After halftime, the Eagles would come out in the second half as a completely different team. The Eagles would outscore Clay County 26-12 in the third quarter but would still trail 54-53 heading into the final quarter of play.

In the fourth quarter, the Eagles would outscore Clay County 27-11 and would win by a final score of 80-67.

Caden Mills led all scorers with 28 points. Sawyer Shockley chipped in 14 points, and Bo Walker added 13 points. Jacob Crain finished with 12 points. Jared Binkley and Austin Miller both finished with 5 points, and Dillion Young rounded out the Eagles’ scoring with 3 points.
