Vernon Eugene Fletcher, 71, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 31, 2019, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Fletcher was born Nov. 23, 1947, in Sparta, to J.T. Fletcher and Vera Maie Spivey Fletcher.
In his younger days, he loved to ride motorcycles but quit riding after he had children. However, he continued to be a Ford truck man throughout his life. He loved his red four-wheel drives. In fact, he refused to sell his ’76 red four-wheel drive because all his children learned to drive in that truck. Mr. Fletcher was a great cook and enjoyed cooking for his family. Although he’d probably never admit it, he also had a secret affection for all of Johanna’s cats throughout the years. Most of all, he loved his family and enjoyed taking care of them.
He gave each of his children special nicknames: Varmint (LaNelle), Hammer Head (Michael), and DeeCee (DeLeesa). Visits from his grandchildren always made him happy. He would cook for them and bring them stuff from town. He always made sure he had enough oatmeal cream pies for them to snack on. No one in his family ever had to wonder if they were loved by him. He will be dearly missed by those who loved him best.
Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Johanna Geer Fletcher; children, LaNelle (Jeremy) Godsey, Michael (Alisa) Fletcher, DeLeesa (David) Price; grandchildren, Andrew Price, Samuel Price, Taylor Fletcher, Lily Fletcher, Chloe Fletcher, Mia Godsey, Gavin Godsey; and sister, Linda Fletcher.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m., Feb. 3, 2019, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Big Springs Cemetery. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m., Feb. 2, at the funeral home. John Lawson will officiate the service.
