WCHS swim team closes out season

The White County High School swim team closed out its season on Feb. 9 and 10 at the Allan Jones Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Tennessee Knoxville.
WCHS had three swimmers qualify for the Tennessee Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association State Swim Meet.
On the men’s side, Japheth Griggs, who made state all four years at WCHS, competed in the 50-yard freestyle race and the 100-yard freestyle race. Griggs finished the 50-yard freestyle race with a time of 22.77, which placed him in 32nd place. In the 100-yard freestyle race, Griggs finished with a time of 50.96, which was good enough for 41st place. Griggs finished his career at WCHS with five individual records and is part of three relay team records.
Tyler Vaughn was the other WCHS men’s swimmer to take part in the event. This was Vaughn’s second straight trip to the state meet. Vaughn swam in the 500-yard free style race. He finished the race with a time of 5:28.64, which put him in 54th place. Vaughn also holds five individual records and is part of two relay team records.
On the women’s side, Evan Welch was the only WCHS swimmer to qualify for the event. Welch, a freshman and swimming in the event for the first time, swam in the 200-yard freestyle race and the 100-yard free style race. Welch finished the 200-yard free style race with a time of 2:08.82, which place her in 59th place. In the 100-yard freestyle race, Welch finished with a time of :59.68.
The WCHS swim team also found out that they won the Division III combined team championship.
