White County High School swim team has three qualify for state meet

The White County High School Swim team took part in the MTHSSA Regional Championship, on Jan. 26, 2018, at the Centennial Sportsplex, in Nashville. The Warriors and Warriorettes had three of their members qualify for the state meet that is going to be held Feb. 9 and 10, at the University of Tennessee Knoxville Swimming Complex.
In the men’s races, Japheth Griggs finished in 8th place in both the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle and was able to qualify for the state meet in both events. Griggs also set a new WCHS record with a time of 50.66 in the 100-meter freestyle. The other warrior to qualify for the state meet was Tyler Vaughn. Vaughn qualified for the state meet in the 500-yard freestyle race. He finished the race with a time of 5:28, which put him in 14th place and was also a new WCHS record. Vaughn also swam in the 100-yard butterfly race. He finished with a time of 1:00.65. He finished the race in 20th place but set a On the women’s side, Evan Welch qualified for the state meet in three different races. Welch first qualified for the 200-yard and 500-yard freestyle race in a meet earlier this season, and in the regional competition, she also qualified for the 100-yard freestyle race. Welch finished the 100-yard freestyle race, with a time of 59.54, which is a new WCHS record. She finished the race in 34th place out of 125 swimmers. Welch also swam in the 50-yard freestyle race. She concluded that race with a time of :27.23, which is good enough for a new WCHS record and placed her in 36th place out of 197 swimmers.
Zoey Layne also swam in the 50-yard freestyle race. She finished with a time of :30.18, which was a new personal best record.
WCHS also had three different women’s relay teams swim at the regional. The first relay team was made up of Welch, Layne, Alexis Weatherly, and Karley Warner. This relay team set a new WCHS record in the 200-yard freestyle race and the 200-yard medley race, where each person swims a different stroke. The second relay team was made up of Kiya Simmons, Katie Anderson, Kelly Wright, and Madisyn Houghton. This team swam in the 200-yard freestyle and the 400-yard freestyle. The third relay team was made up of Lily Jordan, Ashlyn Hanna, Skylar Nash, and Macey Tollison. This team swam in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
Abby Welch also competed Jan. 27 at the Centennial Sportsplex in the MTHSSA Middle School Championship Meet. Welch swam in the 50-yard freestyle and the 100-yard breaststroke. In the freestyle, Welch placed 41st out of 211 swimmers, finishing the race in a time of 31.65, which is a new personal best. In the breaststroke, Welch finished in 30th place out of 70 swimmers, with a time of 1:29, which was also a new personal best for her.
The WCHS Swim Team will finish up their season Feb. 9 and 10 at the state meet at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.
