William “Bill” Thomas Wood

William “Bill” Thomas Wood, 65, of La Porte, Indiana, passed away Aug. 20, 2015, at home.

Mr. Wood was born July 30, 1950, in La Porte, Indiana.

He attended La Porte community schools and went on to serve his country honorably in the U. S. Army in Vietnam. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW, both in La Porte, Indiana.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James Richard Barger and Nellie Fern Dove Barger; a son, William Thomas Wood Jr.; a brother, Phillip “Woody Phillips” Wood, who had resided in Sparta, Tennessee; a nephew, Richard Dow, who had resided in Cookeville, Tennessee; and a niece, Angie Sims Wood.

Survivors include his wife, Rita Hammons Wood, of La Porte, Indiana; two children, James A. Wood, of La Porte, Indiana, Nicky Martin and husband Tim, of Fort Wayne, Indiana; a stepson, Eric Levendoski, of La Porte, Indiana; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Jane Barger Bennett, of Cookeville, Tennessee, Leoretta Barger Sharp and husband Robert, of Woodville, Alabama; several nieces, including Shannon Dow McKereghan, Heather Dow Trudel, both of Cookeville, Laurie Hill Wood Myers, of New Carlisle, Indiana, Jessyca Wood Dahlin, of South Bend, Indiana; several nephews; a sister-in-law, Kim Swindell Wood, of Sparta, Tennessee; and several aunts and uncles who reside in Indiana.

A Celebration of Life service will be 10 a.m., Aug. 27, 2015, at Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, in La Porte, Indiana. Pastor JoEllyn Chadwick will officiate, and military honors will be conducted.

A cremation committal will take place with Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center. Burial will take place at Pine Lake Cemetery, in La Porte, Indiana.

Cutler Funeral Home and Cremation Center, in La Porte, Indiana, is in charge of arrangements.
