Loyd L. Selby, 70, formerly of Sparta,
passed away May 1, 2002, at his residence in Michigan.
Selby was born June 23, 1931, in Sparta, to Alpha and Vera Lou Selby
He was a retired carpenter.
Selby was preceded in death by his parents
and one brother, Robert Selby.
Survivors include his wife, Kedila Selby of Madison Heights, Mich.; two children, Loretta Lynn Selby and Owen Dessel Selby, both of Madison Heights, Mich.; three brothers, Raymond “Johnny” Selby and wife, Dora, of Sparta, Ernest “Morris” Selby and wife, Rita, of Sparta and Bill Selby and wife, Lois, of Walling; two sisters, Peggy Louise Greene and husband, Gene, of … CONTINUED

Lula Virgie Jones Brendle

Lula Virgie Jones Brendle, 91, passed away May 20, 2002, at Calhoun County Medical Center in Battle Creek, Mich.
Brendle was born November 25, 1910, in White County, to Earl Lafate Cates and Virgie Young Cates.
She was a homemaker.
Brendle was preceded in death by her parents and two husbands, Robin C. Jones and Dan Brendle.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Helen Jones of Battle Creek, Mich.; four grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
Services were held May 24, 2002, at the chapel Thurman Funeral Home, with burial in Old New Hope Cemetery. Bro. Carson Whitaker officiated.
Thurman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Brownie Lee Madewell, 88, of Cookeville, passed away May 27, 2002 at Cookeville Regional Medical Center Hospital.
Brownie Lee was born June 17, 1913 in White County, to George Madewell and Mattie Nash Morgan.
She was a charter member of Wilhite Baptist Church and a seamstress for Wilson Sporting Goods.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roosevelt Madewell; her parents, ; one son, Kenneth Ray Madewell; one brother, Sam Morgan and one sister, Gladys Walker.

Crosslin charged with felony vandalism

A pickup indictment was served on Tom Crosslin, 70, of Sparta, after authorities investigated and found he had allegedly vandalized and created over $1,000 in damage to city property.
Several weeks ago the Sparta City Police Dept. was advised about a subject who vandalized trees, plants and sod belonging to the City of Sparta. Crosslin allegedly caused $1,300 worth of damage to city property. According to authorities anything over $500 is considered a felony.
Chief Jeff Guth of the Sparta Police Dept. said Crosslin was picked up on Wednesday morning. Crosslin was released and is scheduled to appear in criminal court on felony vandalism charges on

Charlie Mae Hudgens

Charlie Mae Hudgens, 90, passed away May 27, 2002, at the Samaritan Health Center in Antioch.
Charlie was born November 15, 1911, in White County to Charlie Clay Felton and Zula Mae Robbins Felton.
She lived in Sparta for many years. Hudgens was a former member of West End Church of Christ and Vultee Church of Christ.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carl M. Hudgens and her parents.
Survivors include two daughters, Faye Holland of Atlanta
and Madolyn Rives of Huntsville, Ala.; one son, Raymond Hudgens of Antioch; seven grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren.

Mary Jane Farley Marsh, 93, of Sparta, passed away May 25, 2002, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Marsh was born July 13, 1909, in White County.
She had worked at the Shirt Factory.
Marsh was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Marsh; one son, Milburn Marsh; and parents, Lona and Della Farley .
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Wilma and Gary Greene of Crossville; one son, Willard Marsh of Sparta; one sister, Rose Farley Norris of Ohio; two brothers, Beecher Farley of Sparta and Charlie Farley of Ohio; six grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.
Graveside services were held at 3 p.m.,

Maude Lela Sparkman O’Connor, 91, passed away May 27, 2002, at White County Community Hospital.
O’Connor was born April 22, 1911, in White County, to James P. and Corina Simmons Adair.
She was a homemaker and a resident of Sparta.
O’Connor was preceded in death by: her husband, Willie Lee O’Connor.

Highway 111 crash proves deadly

A fatal collision took the life of Harold T. Davis, 84, of Sparta, on Wednesday morning.
The Emergency 911 Center dispatched emergency personnel to a two vehicle accident on Highway 111 and Millers Point Road at approximately 6:00 a.m., Wednesday.
Davis was traveling on Millers Point Road and made an attempt to cross Highway 111 onto Valley View Drive in a 1995 Dodge Intrepid. According to Ptl. Dale Dodson of the Sparta Police Dept., Davis pulled into the path of a Chrysler and was struck by the vehicle. Community Prevention Initiative receives praise from health council

A successful report from Jan Willhite of the Community Prevention Initiative garnered accolades and a unanimous round of applause from members of the White County Health Council on Tuesday.
Willhite, coordinator for the program, gave the statistics on the success rates at Findlay Elementary and Woodland Park Elementary. According to Willhite, 18 students were referred to the program at Findlay and the program had 55 volunteers with 222 hours of service. Accident sends one to Erlanger

Local law enforcement officers and emergency personnel worked together to assist Franklin D. Waldo, 57, of Crossville, after he sustained life threatening injuries in an accident on Saturday. Waldo was transported to the White County Community Hospital by White County EMS. An Erlanger Life Force helicopter arrived and Waldo was flown to Erlanger Medical Center in Chattanooga where he is currently listed in stable condition in the Intensive Care Unit.
