Private property owners must maintain cemeteries

Laws have been in effect for many years about protection of cemeteries, with hefty fines and imprisonment attached as a part of the punishment. However, most Tennesseans do not realize these laws also require private property owners to maintain a cemetery that might be located on their land.
For several years Billie Clark and Geraldine Pollard have devoted their time and efforts to helping White Countians become more informed about these laws. Clark, who is a member of the White County Genealogical Society, helped her late husband, Fred Clark, begin organizing a list of cemeteries in the county. Rufus C. Dial

Rufus C. Dial, 86, of Sparta, passed away March 25, 2003, at White County Community Hospital.
Dial was born April 24, 1916, in Overton County, to James Shelby and Tina Roxie Smith Dial.
He had been a truck driver.
Survivors include two daughters, Marjorie Mullins of Sparta and Margaret Sue Turk of Bowling Green, Ky.; one son, James Buford Dial of Sparta; nine grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren
Services will be at 2 p.m., March 29, 2003, at Hunter Funeral Home with burial in Highland Cemetery. Paul Bradley will officiate.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Albert G. Heath, 75, passed away March 25, 2003.
Survivors include his loving companion, Dot Helton; cherished friend and mother of his children, Irene Wooten; four daughters, Belinda S. Price of Spencer, Melavie K. Heath of Nashville and Darlene Howser and Denise Roberson both of Sparta; one son, Charles Bennie Heath of Donelson; 13 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; five sisters, Mary E. Overstreet, Hazel V. Helton, Pearl haddock, Agnes Krichler and Reba Stewart; and one brother, Marvin Heath.

Raymond “Johnny” Selby, 73, of Sparta, passed away March 25, 2003.
Selby was born June 10, 1929, in
Whitleyville, to Alpha Desol and Vera Lou Hunt Selby.
He served in the U.S. Air Force as a senior master sergeant during the Korean Conflict and Vietnam War.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Harper Selby and two brothers, Loyd “Jim” and Bob Selby.

Cragrock office fire ruled arson

A fire at the Cragrock Village apartments on the night of March 21, 2003 has been ruled arson.
According to Sgt. Jeff Hutson, of the Sparta Police Department, dispatchers received a call about a fire at the Cragrock Village office complex at approximately 8:15 p.m. The Sparta Fire Department, White County E.M.S. and Caney Fork Electric were also alerted to the scene.
According to Hutson, also a Sparta Police fire investigator, personnel with the Sparta Fire Department located the source of the fire at a rear window of the facility. The window was reportedly shattered and the fire was burning on the interior floor near the … CONTINUED

Bernie Ruth Johnson Foster, 71, of Doyle, passed away March 17, 2003.
Foster was born Feb. 26, 1932, in Sparta, to Wiley and Vera Roberts Johnson.
She had been a homemaker.
Foster was preceded in death by her husband, J.C. Foster and one grandson, Stephen Paul Savage.

Stanley Clayton Allen. Sr., 45, of Sparta, passed away March 23, 2003, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Allen was born Nov. 14, 1957, to William E. Allen and Lillian D. Bean Allen.
He had been a carpenter and employed in construction.

As thousands of Americans are watching the endless news coverage of the war in Iraq, waiting for a hopeful glimpse of a loved one, numerous other individuals are seeking ways to show their support for the nation’s soldiers. For White Countians, a patriotic rally tonight will give them the opportunity to unite as American citizens for a common cause.
