Mattie Treva Dukes, 86, of Doyle, passed away May 14, 2006.
Dukes was born July 12, 1919, in Gadsen, Ala., to Charlie Parker Brimer and Lula Prater Brimer.
Dukes was preceded in death by husband, Daniel M. Dukes; one son, Ernest Leslie Dukes; three brothers; and one sister.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Joe M. and Mary Lou Dukes, Elmer Gene and Margie Dukes, James and Martha Dukes, all of Doyle; two daughters, Mary Tosh, of Manchester, Diane Dukes, of Doyle; one son-in-law, Houston Tosh, of Fayetteville; one sister, Beadie Randolph, of Spencer; 10 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Billy Edwin Hunter, 51, of Cookeville, passed away May 19, 2006, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Hunter was born June 17, 1954, in Henry County, Ind., to Clarence E. Hunter and Shelby Jean Hunter (Cooper).
He had been a member of Trinity Assembly Church and had worked at Russell Stover Candy Factory.
Hunter was preceded in death by his father, Clarence E. Hunter.

Ruby Luna, 82, of Sparta, passed away May 16, 2006, at NHC Healthcare.
Survivors include one nephew, Burgess Johnson, of Walling; and two nieces, Demple Boyd, of Walling, and Hellon England, of Sparta.
Services were held at 1p.m., May 18, 2006, at Spring Hill the Baptist Church Cemetery. Bro. Alton Marcum and Bro. Frank Randolph officiated.

Commissioners vote down the request for E-911 land

White County commissioners have voted down a request from E-911 Board of Directors for an acre of land adjacent to the ambulance service that could have possibly reduced the amount of money the county would need to appropriate for the 2006-2007 E-911 budget.
A resolution presented at the Monday night meeting of White County Board of Commissioners to set aside the acre of land failed to pass for lack of a majority vote. According to Jerry Denton, chairman of E-911 Board of Directors and county commissioner, the board would have placed a dollar value on the donated land and deducted that amount from the funding … CONTINUED


Convicted sex offender still at large

A 25-year-old man who was convicted recently in White County Criminal Court on three counts of sexual offenses against minors escaped from from Van Buren County Jail on May 14 and is still on the run, according to law enforcement officials.
Detective Chris Isom said Joel Blanton was convicted during a trial April 11-12, in White County, of one count of aggravated rape of a child and two counts of aggravated sexual battery on a child. Isom had investigated the case in conjunction with Tennessee Department of Children Services. He said aggravated rape of a child is a Class A felony, and aggravated sexual battery … CONTINUED


Sullivan Knowles is site of yet another serious crash

While traveling in a 1991 Ford Explorer, a Sparta woman crossed the centerline on Sullivan Knowles Road in a sharp curve and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on in the early evening hours Monday.
According to Trooper David Slatton, Tennessee Highway Patrol, Joshua Vaughn, 23, of Sparta, was airlifted to Erlanger after the Sparta-White County Rescue Squad extrication team freed him from the twisted 1988 Chevrolet Cavalier. His medical condition was unknown at press time.

Simmons was born Oct. 19, 1948, in Van Buren County, to Joe Paul and Anna Mae Hodge Simmons.
Simmons was preceded in death by his father, Joe Paul Simmons and one brother Joe Darrell Simmons.

Turner was born May 19, 1938, in Monticello, Iowa to Harry and Edna Mae Crane Guyan.
Turner was preceded in death by her father.
Survivors include husband, Peyton Randolph, of Sparta; one son, Allen Lyons, of Waukon, Iowa; mother, Edna May Guyan, of Monticello, Iowa; three grandchildren; two brothers, Steve Guyan, of St. Charles, Mo., Daniel Guyan, of Monticello, Iowa; and three sisters, Barbara Riedel, of Richmond, Va., Linda Martin, of Sterling, Ill., and Jean Evans, of Kansas City, Mo.

Walter Nathan “Buckie” King, 83, of Sparta, passed away May 13, 2006, at White County Community Hospital.
King was born March 31, 1923, in White County, to Frank and Myrtle Hill King.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He had been employed at Sparta Hardware.
King was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Robert Louis King; and one daughter, Bonnie Sue King.

He was retired from military service.
