Brandy Michelle Gentry, 22, of Knoxville, passed away June 3, 2006, at University of Tennessee Medical Center, in Knoxville.
Gentry was born Nov. 14, 1983, in Cookeville, to Lewis and Cheryl Foster Gentry.
Gentry was preceded in death by her grandmother, Margaret Gentry, and grandfathers, Charles Foster and George Martin Gentry.
Survivors include her parents, Lewis and Cheryl Foster Gentry; grandmother, Elizabeth Foster, of Sparta; one brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Rachel Gentry, of Cookeville; and one niece, Madison Gentry, of Cookeville.
Services were 1 p.m., June 7, 2006, at Whitson Funeral Home Chapel, with burial in West Cemetery. George Hollander officiated.

Motis Franklin Green, 83, of Sparta, passed away June 2, 2006, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Green was born Dec. 4, 1922, in Doyle, to James Emery Green and Maggie Yates Green.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and had been a logger.
Green was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Joe Lee Green; and three sisters, Merty Beatrice Lance, Margaret Allen, Feppie Barnes.

Henry Carrick, 80, of Sparta, passed away May 28, 2006, at White County Hospital.
Carrick was born Sept. 11, 1925, in White County, to Sam and Lula Frierson Carrick.
Carrick was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Willie Mae Ramsey Carrick; daughter, Lula Annice Carrick; two sisters, Mary Carrick and Viola Carrick; and three brothers, James Edward Carrick, Douglas Carrick and Robert Ray Carrick.

Audrey May Burks Davenport, 85, of Morrison, passed away June 2, 2006, at River Park Hospital, in McMinnville.
Davenport was born May 12, 1921, in Warren County, to Charlie H. Burks and Margie Hulett Burks.
She was a retired sales clerk and homemaker.
Davenport was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil Oren Davenport; her parents; granddaughter, LaShelle Bess; brothers, Granville Burks and Dalton Burks; sister, Eva Pistole; stepbrothers, Coy Dennis and Robert Dennis; and stepsisters, Thelma Burks and Lois Herndon.

Dillian Ray Taylor, 85, passed away June 1, 2006, at White County Community Hospital.
Taylor was preceded in death by his parents, Herman F. Taylor and Dellar Martha Henderson Taylor; and brothers, Ray Davis Taylor, Toy Taylor and Luther Taylor; sisters, Emma Luna, Willie Hutchings, Bobbie Young and Elmer Taylor.
Survivors include two sisters, Mary Lou Cantrell and Ruthie Adcock, both of Sparta, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be 1 p.m., June 5, 2006, at Taylor’s Providence Church with burial in Taylor’s Providence Cemetery. Bro. David Lee England will officiate.

Cheryl Rose Maynard

Cheryl Rose Maynard, 57, of Sparta, passed way June 2, 2006.
Maynard was born Jan. 19, 1949, in Cumberland County, to Glen Norris and Arxie Young Norris.
She had been employed by Tennessee Department of Correction.
Maynard was preceded in death by her mother.
Survivors include her husband, Terry Maynard, of Sparta; two daughters, Rebecca Diane Cooper and Monica Dawn Hedgecoth, both of Crossville; one stepdaughter, Teresa Welch, of Cookeville; six grandchildren; father, Glen Norris, of Crossville; and one half-sister, Gina Webb, of Crossville.
Services will be 2 p.m., June 5, 2006, at the chapel of Whitson Funeral Home, in Cookeville, with burial in Smith Chapel Cemetery.

Sale of beer to minors could be deterred with new law

Editor’s note: This is Part II of a two-part story about the selling of beer to underage individuals.
Business establishments that hold beer permits will soon be given extra leeway if they choose to participate in a certification program designed to curtail the sale of beer to minors.
The Responsible Vendor Act, which will go into effect July 1, 2007, will require carding of every individual who wishes to purchase beer. However, this coverall “carding” will only be required of those vendors who choose to participate in the program. Child struck by vehicle at Sparta Drive-In

Breanna Smith, 11, escaped serious injury after being run over by a vehicle around midnight, May 27, 2006, at the Sparta Drive-In.
“She is having problems with both legs,” said Kevin Kirby, Breanna’s father. “X-rays were done at the emergency room, but they didn’t find any broken bones. She is having some other testing done because she still can’t walk on them.”
According to Kirby, his daughter has a very strong will and is very disappointed because she was looking forward to summer vacation from school.

Truck fire ruled ‘suspicious’

At approximately 4:40 a.m., Sparta Fire Department, responded to a call at Little Texas Mobile Home, on Walker Cove Road at Highway 111, about a fire.
When the first firefighters arrived on the scene, they discovered a parked Freightliner tractor was on fire.
Fire Investigator Jeff Hutson was called to the scene. The fire has been ruled suspicious.
“Evidence was collected and sent to the crime lab,” said Hutson. “The bomb and arson squad was also called in and will be assisting in the investigation.”

Jonnie Elizabeth Ragland, 98, of Watertown, passed away on May 30, 2006, at Cedars Health Care Center, in Lebanon.
Ragland was born on May 5, 1908, in Mt. Juliet, to Prentice and Lizzie Kimmons Frazier.
Ragland was preceded in death by her husband, James Campbell Ragland; one daughter, Elizabeth Sue Talley; and one brother, Keeling Frazier.
