Elsie Jones recently opened her dream store and hopes she can be a blessing to others by offering name- brand clothing at discounted prices.
A Penny From Heaven was formerly 2nd Look Fashion, and Jones had been talking with the former owner, Pam Carter, for more than a year about buying the business.
“I have been wanting to open a store for the last seven years and have just been waiting for the opportunity to present itself,” said Jones.

Burks and Curtiss donate ‘Blue Books’ to WCMS

White County Middle School seventh grade social studies teachers now have an added teaching tool that was provided to them free-of-charge courtesy of State Senator Charlotte Burks and State Representative Charles Curtiss.
Burks and Curtiss made a trip to WCMS, on Thursday, to present copies of Tennessee’s Blue Book to the seventh grade educators who will be teaching the state’s history in government. Both legislators signed the inside covers of the books as a way of showing their dedication to the education of the generation they said would soon be the leaders of the future.

Park expected to be dedicated in December

The second of three phases of renovations and construction is about to be completed at Sparta Civic Center with a dedication ceremony hopefully scheduled just in time for the holiday season. Tommy Pedigo, City of Sparta mayor, toured the site of the long-awaited project on Thursday. As he spoke with Hal Danson, of Danson Construction, about the progress of the work, Pedigo pointed out some special features that will attract White Countians to the beautifully designed park.
They layout of the brick pavilion, which sits several hundred feet of Highway 70 and faces the busy roadway, has been constructed to be “user-friendly.”

Senior Circle sponsoring craft fair

Senior Circle is sponsoring a craft show Nov. 4 at Sparta Civic Center, and the event will showcase a wide array of hand made gift ideas including jewelry, needlework, hand-painted items, Christmas ornaments, and wood carvings and burnings.
Among the artists selling crafts is Frank Beverly.
Beverley moved to Doyle seven years ago from Aurora, Ill., and he is a three-year employee of White County Community Hospital. He took up wood carving and burning as a hobby a few years ago.
Beverley typically uses wood from around the Sparta area, and he enjoys making spiritual plaques, wall hangings and stand-alone pieces. His wife Sharon hand paints … CONTINUED

Eva Edith Wilson Denton, 85, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 17, 2006, at NHC of Sparta.
Denton was born May 12, 1921, in White County, to William Petway Wilson and Hattie Leota Stockwell Wilson.
She had been a factory worker.
Denton was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Willard Melvin Denton; two brothers, Carl Wilson and Sidney Wilson; and two sisters, Dorothy Miller and Maggie Brown.

Deborah Yvonne Gibbs, 55, of Sparta, passed away Oct. 25, 2006, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Gibbs was born March 9, 1951, in Dayton, Ohio, to Fred Klein and Thelma Kinnaird Klein.
She had been employed as a teacher’s aid at Cassville Elementary School.
She was preceded in death by her father and one brother, Roger Klein.
Survivors include her husband, Paul V. Gibbs Jr.; two daughters and spouses, Angela and Stacy Prater, of Sparta, and Pamela and Jason Vickers, of Cookeville; her mother; one brother and spouse, Ron and Pam Klein, of Lascassas; one grandson, Joshua Vickers, of Cookeville; and several nieces and nephews.

Sells was born Aug. 12, 1923, in Overton County, to Floyd Holman and Lucy Hensley Holman.

Bonnie Lucille Bellamy, 86, of Cookeville, passed away Oct. 25, 2006.
Bellamy was born May 1, 1920, in White County, to James Cleveland and Laura Bell Robinson Bumbalough.
She had been employed as store manager and clerk for convenience markets.

Two ejected in crash after striking pole

Richard Donnie Anderson, 21, of Sparta, escaped serious injuries, but is facing several criminal charges after crashing the vehicle he was driving Friday night.
A passenger in Anderson’s vehicle only suffered minor injuries as well, but volunteers spent time searching for additional victims in crash, only to discover the driver gave false information to law enforcement officials.
Because of false information given to law enforcement by Anderson, volunteers combed the area during the cold Oct. 20 night for about an hour looking for two additional passengers.

Joe Thomas Graham, 63, of Walling, passed away Oct. 15, 2006, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Graham was born Feb. 25, 1943, in Sparta, to Joe Gaines Graham and Willie Mae Graham Goodwin.

Mercy’s Market opened three months ago, and the daily breakfast and lunch specials have already earned a winning reputation.
Ruben and Mercy Hormilla re-opened the former Hall’s Market on Monterey Highway in Board Valley, and business in booming. They begin serving breakfast at 5:30 a.m., and the menu includes biscuits,
