Fist fight sends juvenile to court

A Wednesday morning confrontation on a school bus sent one juvenile to the hospital emergency room and has resulted in the other teenager having a juvenile petition issued on him.
According to Detective Chris Isom, of White County Sheriff Department, a fight ensued between two male juveniles on a school bus bound for Northfield Elementary. Isom said the bus driver attempted to intervene, but the boys exited the bus when it stopped at Northfield and continued their fight.

14 ounces of cocaine seized

Speeding and not wearing a seat belt began a traffic stop that ended with one Sparta man arrested and 14 ounces of cocaine confiscated.
Jorge Gonzalez Castaneda, 36, of Sparta, was charged with drug and weapon charges Monday morning.
At approximately 10:50 a.m., Sept. 17, 2007, Deputy Dale Bumbalough, of White County Sheriff Department, observed the driver of a red Chevrolet not wearing a seat belt and traveling above the posted speed limit, northbound, on Highway 111.
Castaneda left the highway and traveled to South Church Street where Bumbalough stopped the vehicle and came into contact with the driver.

Emma Jean Dickerson Smith, 70, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 16, 2007, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Smith was born Nov. 11, 1937, in Sparta, to Charlie Howard Dickerson and Notie Mall Frazier Dickerson.
She was retired from the Shirt Factory, in Campaign.
Smith was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Mattie Rice.
Survivors include husband, J.C. John W. Stafford, Sr., 77, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 18, 2007.
Stafford was born Dec. 8, 1929, in Jackson County, to Pink and Helen Keith Stafford.
He was a self-employed mechanic.
Stafford was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Sylvia Lynn Stafford; and four sisters, Louettia Ramsey, Ethel Pippin, Willie Farmer and Gladys Martin.

David Richard Simmons, 50, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 17, 2007, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Simmons was born May 13, 1957, in Sparta, to Ernest and Barbara Ann Spivey Simmons.
He served in the U.S. Navy.

Lyrea Ann Farley Kinnaird, 78, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 17, 2007, at Dekalb Community Hospital.
Kinnaird was born Oct. 24, 1928, in White County, to Claude Paul and Ethel Nash Farley.
She had been a teacher’s aid.
Kinnaird was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Carl Berton Kinnaird; sister, Mildred Wheeler; brothers, Willis and Carl Farley; and two infants.

Convicted felon facing more drug charges

Daryl Hoyte Leonard, 54, of Sparta, appeared in White County General Sessions court Friday on new drug charges.
Leonard has a lengthy list of drug and weapon charges in White and Cumberland counties and is listed on the Tennessee Department of Corrections website as being on parole until May 15, 2008. Conviction on the two separate cases pending dispensation in White County could possibly change that date.
According to the Cumberland County Circuit Court Clerk’s office, Leonard was charged in Crossville with several drug offenses in February of 1999. In April of 2000, he was in White County court facing more drug charges, and in November … CONTINUED

America celebrates the 220-year-old document that defines the democratic system that makes the nation the greatest in the world. The U.S. Constitution celebrates its birthday today.
Even with the use of 18th century words and phrases, The Constitution remains a ‘marvel of brevity and clarity,’ executed by brave American delegates at the birth of this great nation.
The only item on the agenda at the last meeting of the delegates to the Constitutional Convention, held on Sept. 17, 1787, was to sign the Constitution of the United States of America. Out of the 55 delegates, 39 signed, and the U.S. Constitution became part of history.

Speed limits debated

A question about the appropriate speed limits on roads in White County has caused commissioners to reevaluate the manner in which these limits are set and how the signage will appear on each road.
Members of Steering Committee B heard from White County Road Superintendent Robert Weaver last week as he appeared at their request to discuss the speed limits on county roads and those in subdivisions.
Commissioners suggested a petition should be gathered that is signed by a majority of residents on a road before the speed limit is changed. In the past, some requests have been granted by the request of only one … CONTINUED
