WCHS soccer picks up road win at Coffee County

    The WCHS soccer team took to the road for the first time this season and came back to Sparta with a 4-1 win in hand.
    The Warriors, who had been idle over a week, defeated the Coffee County Red Raiders for their second victory of the season improving to 2-1 overall.  The Warriors built a 1-0 halftime lead and never trailed in the contest.

Tennis defeated by Lebanon

    The WCHS tennis teams returned to action for the first time in a week and were handily defeated in District 7AAA action by Lebanon.
    Justin Turney kept the day from being a complete sweep by Lebanon as he won the match between the top two boys’ seeds.  He took the 8-4 victory.  From there, it was all Lebanon.

Deal offered to ‘trade’ water’

Board members with O’Connor Utility District have agreed to “trade” water with City of Sparta in a solution to a serious water pressure issue in the Rainbow Hills Subdivision.
Residents of the affected neighborhood appeared at the March 6 meeting of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen to air their complaints. According to spokesperson Gail Swindell, the pressure was lowered after recent changes to the system.
Reportedly, City of Sparta turned off a valve near Rainbow Hills. Sparta Mayor Tommy Pedigo said this action was taken when Sparta water officials discovered a water connection where Sparta was selling water to O’Connor, and then O’Connor “was turning around” and … CONTINUED

WCHS track competes in dual meet at Warren County

Lacy Yslas led the WCHS track team with wins in the discus and the shot put

    The White County High School track team competed in their first meet that counted team points.  It was WCHS against Warren County.
    The WCHS girls were defeated 51-45 while the boys were outscored 76-31.  Team members’ finishes in their respective events earn points.  Total points are compiled at the end of the meet to determine a winner.
    Track coach, David Bruce, commented, “We had a good outing in our first official event.  We didn’t win, but we had some good showings.  The girls actually could have won, but I was missing two … CONTINUED

    The District 7AAA baseball schedule is set up where each team plays back-to-back games with each district opponent.  This format was put into place several years ago because of a guy by the name of David Price, who pitched for Blackman.

Three arrested after altercation on baseball field

A high school baseball player, and reportedly his parents were arrested and charged with assault after an altercation with the coach after a game against Lebanon on March 18.   
According to warrants obtained by Brian Everett and signed by Judge Sam Benningfield, on March 19, 2008, Tyler E. Mills, 18, Sharon R. Mills, 44, and David Cletus Mills, 40, all of the same address in Sparta, were charged with assault and are scheduled to make their initial appearances in court March 28.
The incident allegedly occurred while the players were gathering for their post game meeting with the coach and the crowd was beginning to disperse.According to CONTINUED

PMI $200,000 victim of copper thieves

Bright and shiny. With the rising price of copper, thieves have been targeting heating and cooling units to strip them of their metals. Legislators are continuing to formulate ways to deter these vandals from damaging the properties of Tennesseans.

Investigators with White County Sheriff Department are following leads in the latest copper theft, where Precision Molding Inc., had a couple of large commercial units damaged.
“We got a call Monday, about someone who had stolen coils and condensers out of two commercial units,” said Detective John Ford, lead investigator on the case. “These commercial units aren’t like a normal home unit. They cost around $100,000.”

Liens will be placed on city property

Three separate properties in City of Sparta that have been under repair will now have additional costs attached to them.
During the recent meeting Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen, Mayor Tommy Pedigo asked members how they wanted to proceed in the matters where some property owners had been issued citations because of violations.
Dennis Clark, codes enforcement officer, reminded the board the citations had been issued more than 90 days ago. The owners had appeared at a December 2007 board meeting to address the problems. They were supposed to have already corrected the violations by the time they appeared at the meeting. However, they had failed to … CONTINUED

Alderman wants ‘mosquito breeding ground’ cleaned

Alderman Howard Griffin said he wants someone to check into who owns the property adjacent to Life Care Center of Sparta and ask that person to clean up the debris scattered alongside the road that leads into the facility.
Griffin, during a recent meeting of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen, expressed his concerns about “the mess” he sees each time he travels the road that enters the cul-de-sac where Life Care Center of Sparta is situated. Life Care does not own this property. According to information obtained from the office of White County Assessor of Property, J. Paul Smith owns the strip of land.
