Margaret Smith Stampfli

Margaret Smith Stampfli, 88, passed away March 23, 2008.
Stampfli was the daughter of Victor and Ruby Swindell Smith.
She was retired from the State of Tennessee, with 30 years service in the women’s prison system.
Stampfli was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Stephen Stampfli; and brother, Lester Smith.
Survivors include her son, Paul David Stampfli Dracos, of Nashville; daughters, Carolyn Stampfli and Janie Layne and husband Bobby, of Gruetli-Laager; brother, Hershel Lee Smith, of Adairsville, Ky.; 11 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
Gravesides services will be 2 p.m., March 25, 2008, at Bethlehem Cemetery, in Doyle.

Frona Louetta Hill, 89, of Sparta, passed away March 16, 2008.
Hill was born March 24, 1918, in Overton County, to George W. Hawkins and Dora Langford Hawkins.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Claston Hill; one sister, Eppie Boles; four brothers, Raymond Hawkins, Milton Hawkins, Vanis Hawkins, Huel Hawkins; and two infants, Judy Ann Hill and Billie Sue Hill.

Haskel Elby Howard, 87, of Smithville, passed away March  24, 2008.
Howard was born to Erbie Haskel and Mertie Ovella Slagle Howard.
He was retired from the U.S. Navy.
Howard was preceded in death by his parents; one infant brother; and two brothers, Kenneth D. Howard and Holly J. Howard.

Clata Dell Horton

Clata Dell Horton, 86, of Sparta, passed away March 15, 2008.
Horton was born Jan. 20, 1922, in White County, to Johnny McPeak and Stella Davis McPeak.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Mason Horton; and one brother, J.B. McPeak.
Survivors include three sisters, Ernestine Boyd, Laurine McPeak, Mattie Cruise; one niece, Gail Blankenship and husband Dale; two nephews, Steve Boyd and wife Debra, Ron Cruise and wife Beverly; and several great-nieces and great-nephews.
Services were 2 p.m., March 17, 2008, at Thurman Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Mt. Pisgah Cemetery. Bro. Bobby Wilhite officiated.
Thurman Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Warrior baseball blanked by Blackman

It was a tough outing for the Warriors when Blackman visited Monday, March 24th, for a District 7AAA contest.  The Blaze roughed up three different Warrior pitchers as they captured the 11-0 win.  The Warriors managed only two hits on the day while Blackman picked up 15, including a trio of home runs.

Connie Diane Keiber

Connie Diane Keiber, 61, of Saint Marys, Ohio, passed away March 22, 2008, at White County Community Hospital.
Keble was born Nov. 1, 1946, in Connersville, Ind., to Eugene A. and Josephine Hendricks Keeper.
Funeral services will be March 27, 2008, in St. Mary’s, Ohio.
Survivors include two daughters, Betty Crest and Diane Russell, both of St. Marys, Ohio; one son, Christopher Keiber, of Wapak, Ohio; and nephew, Will Nunnery, of Sparta.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of local arrangements.

Linda Elaine Brown Robinson

Linda Elaine Brown Robinson, age 63, of Sparta, passed away March 20, 2008, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Robinson was born July 11, 1944, in White County, to Robert and Maybele Elliott Brown. She was a flight attendant.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband Robert A. Robinson.
Survivors include her sister, Patsy Scott and husband Jimmy, of Sparta; brother: Robert D. Brown and wife Zelda, of Sparta; and nieces and nephews,  Kathy Scott Chapman and husband Terry, of Murfreesboro, Andrew Brown, of Jasper, Daniel and Zachary Brown, both of Sparta, and Steve Scott and wife Cathy, of Nashville.

Margaret Barlow, 89, of Sparta, passed away, March 21, 2008 at her residence.
Barlow was the daughter of Thomas Willie and Mary Emma Lee Ellis.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Thomas Clinton Barlow; grandsons, Ray Barlow Jr., Billy K. Knowles and Johny Taylor; daughter-in-law, Mary Lee Barlow; four sisters, Pearl Barlow, Dona Hamilton, Theana Coffee and Ova Denson; brother, Clayton Ellis; and great-great-grandson, Kevin Barlow.

One injured in Bockman Way crash

Collision. When the vehicles collided, the front wheel area of this dark red 1997 Chrysler van was severely damaged.

A crash at the intersection of Bockman Way and Butler Street Monday morning sent one Sparta woman to the hospital.

According to Patrolman Brent Copeland, Sparta Police Department, at approximately 8:11 a.m., March 17, 2008, Lorena F. McKay, 64, of Sparta, was driving a dark red 1997 Chrysler Town and Country van.
McKay was traveling east, on Bockman Way, and collided with David Lane Pope, 53, of Sparta, who was driving a blue 1996 Chevrolet Explorer van.

2nd meth lab discovered in a week

While two White County Sheriff Department officers were attempting to recover a stolen vehicle in the northwestern portion of the county, they discovered a second meth lab in less than a week.
Shawn Troglin, of Sparta, was charged with intent to manufacture methamphetamine.
According to Deputy Dale Bumbalough, Deputy Craig Wilson and Sgt. Jody O’Dell were at a residence on Carter Road, just off Tollisontown Road, when they observed Troglin drive by, “acting suspicious.”
“It looked like he was going to turn in,” said Bumbalough. “But when he saw the officers, he went to a neighbor’s house.”

Hop on over, Easter is early

Traditions, old and new, come together in a spirit of rebirth at Easter.
    From the holiest of days for Christians, the day commemorating Jesus’ victory over death and his resurrection, to a day of food and fun, hunting eggs, (reportedly hidden by the Easter Bunny) to the parade of fine hats, the Easter holiday has a variety of symbols and traditions.
    According to legend, even the origin of the name “Easter” is continually debated. Does it derive from the word “east” or from the name of the ancient goddess, Eastre?  (She was the goddess of the pagan festival celebrating the return of warmer weather.)
