It’s time for my yearly column about Thanksgiving and all the things with which I feel I am blessed.
At first as I started to write this column I thought it has been a pretty rough past few weeks. Maybe it’s hard to count blessings and think of things for which to be thankful when I am still feeling so empty. Almost every Thanksgiving for the past six years, it seems I have had to find a way to get through a painful loss to my extended family.
But then I thought a little deeper about things and I realized that because of those loved ones and so … CONTINUED

The first and only female mayor of Sparta passed away Wednesday, leaving behind a lifetime of service and commitment to her community.
Margaret Pearson, whose true age never seemed to be a factor in how hard she worked, first became a part of the political arena in 1987, when she was the first woman elected to Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen. This was only one of many “firsts” for Pearson. She was also … CONTINUED

While most people are either relaxing after all the turkey and dressing on Thursday or fighting the maddening crowds doing their Christmas shopping, the Warrior and Warriorette basketball teams will be back on the hardwood on both Friday and Saturday competing in the Thanksgiving Classic hosted by Warren County High School.
The Warriorettes will open the Classic on Thursday at 4 p.m. against Gallatin. The Warriors will have the second game of the day also taking on Gallatin.
The Gallatin girls’ squad finished 7-20 last year, but played in what most consider the toughest girls district in the state, District 9. They have to compete against the likes … CONTINUED

The up and down movement of state revenue collections has caused officials to take a long hard look at finances and how Tennessee’s budget can be trimmed even farther than first anticipated.
State revenue collections for October 2008 were $709.1 million. This figure was only 1 percent above the collections for October 2007.
However, October 2008 was the third consecutive month where sales taxes and corporate income taxes experienced negative growth, according to Tennessee Finance and Administration Commissioner Dave Goetz.
October’s collections were $75.8 million less than the budgeted estimate. The general fund was under-collected by $72 million. The four other funds were under-collected by $3.8 million.
Sales … CONTINUED

America’s day of thanks is a time when families get together and celebrate the bounty, with which they’ve been blessed.
Former history teacher and coach at White County High School, Roy Sewell, is quick to point out the true origins of Thanksgiving.
“The first settlers that came over here, that was what it was about – giving thanks that they had found themselves a free land – a land that they could live in and be free,” said Sewell.
He says he’s thankful for being an American and that families across America are free to continue gathering for a traditional dinner, just has he has done most of … CONTINUED
