In the early 90’s, Kirsty (Sims) Young was playing volleyball for White County High School.
Now, as the start of the 2009-10 school year approaches, Young will be taking over her alma mater’s volleyball team with the hope of maintaining the program that was built by her coach, Lynn Cannon.

Local pitching machine all stars begin play

Driving a base hit. Roby Enlow led Sparta with three hits in their 14-9 loss to Lebanon Monday night in Carthage. They were also defeated by Smith County 8-3 on Tuesday.

Sparta’s two 10 and under pitching machine all star baseball teams began action this week in their tournaments.

July 4th Celebration

The first-ever White County Karaoke Star competition was a huge success, with 18 talented individuals taking to the stage at Sparta Amphitheater, on July 4, 2009. First place winner was Rachel Young, who won $125 and a trophy; second place went to Angie Howard, $75 and a trophy; and third place, Austin Francis, $50 and a trophy. [VIDEO BY KIM SWINDELL WOOD]


Graham charged in TennCare fraud

A 53-year-old White County woman has been charged with selling prescription drugs that were paid for by TennCare.
Ruby W. Graham, of Sparta, was reportedly picked up on June 30, 2009, after a joint investigation with White County Sheriff Office and Tennessee Bureau of Investigation.
According to the Office of Inspector General, Graham was charged with one count of TennCare fraud. She allegedly used TennCare to fill a prescription for morphine sulfate, which is a controlled-release drug used to treat moderate to severe pain requiring round-the clock relief for an extended period of time. Mary Jane Ridge

Mary Jane Ridge, 89, of Sparta, passed away July 5, 2009, at White County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Ridge was born Nov. 30, 1919, in Springfield, Ohio, to Arthur and Martha Jane Fisher Wilson.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow Wilson Keen Sr.; parents; and two great-grandchildren, Zachery and Noah Keen.
Survivors include three daughters, Barbara Brock and husband Bill, of Quebeck, Louise Prater and husband Butch, Mary Helen Keen, all of Sparta; three sons, Malcolm Lester Keen and wife Shirley, Earl Thomas Keen and wife Nancy, Woodrow Wilson Keen Jr., all of Sparta; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Alvie D. Horn, 60, passed away July 3, 2009, at Erlanger Medical Center, in Chattanooga.
Mr. Horn was born May 18, 1949, in Putnam County. He was the son of Wilsie Sanford Horn and Dorothy Hall Horn Loftis.
He was self-employed as an automobile mechanic.
Mr. Horn was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers Alex Sanford Horn, Samuel Eddie Horn, and two sisters, Barbara Horn and Ruby Jewel Horn.

Stolen property recovered in White County

Officers with White County Sheriff Department recovered this jet ski, June 30, after finding it at a residence on Coal Bank Road.

Officers with White County Sheriff Department recovered a Kawasaki jet ski, June 30, from a residence on Coal Bank Road that had been reported stolen in Cumberland County.

According to Detective Ruben Hormilla with WCSD, he received a call from an investigator with Crossville Criminal Investigation Division who reportedly gave him information about two jet skis and a motorcycle, which had been reported stolen and were believed to be stored at the residence.

Sophia Lynn Smothers, 50, of Sparta, passed away July 4, 2009, at White County Community Hospital.

Ms. Smothers was born Dec. 1, 1958, in Bartow, Fla. She was the daughter of Wilson Smothers and Jeannette Harville Stewart.
She was preceded in death by her father, Wilson Smothers, and stepfather, Harold Stewart.
Survivors include her mother, Jeannette Stewart, of Sparta; stepmother, Brenda Smothers, of Bartow, Fla.; two sisters, Melinda Pallotta and her life partner, Larry Neeley, of Sparta, Pamela Farahani, of Danville, Calif.; brother, Richard Smothers and wife Tina, of Spencer; half-sister, Kathy Toro and husband Eddie, of Bartow, Fla.; two nieces, Sheena Farahani, of Sacramento, Calif., Ashley Roberts

Joyce Ann Lawson Hash, 55, of Quebeck, passed away July 4, 2009, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.

Ms. Hash was born April 27, 1954, in Sparta. She was the daughter of the late Marvin Lawson and Edna Young Lawson Dulaney and Bill Dulaney.
She had worked many years at Wagner Electric/Federal Mogul, in Sparta.
Ms. Hash was preceded in death by her parents, Marvin Lawson and Edna Lawson Dulaney; stepfather Bill Dulaney; three sisters, Mattie Lawson, Frances, Brown, Valorie Dulaney; and one brother-in-law, Gary Hutton.
