Braddie Sullivan Jr.

Braddie Sullivan Jr., 78, of Spencer, passed away July 19, 2009, at White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Sullivan was born April 24, 1931, in Van Buren County, to Braddie Sullivan Sr. and Audrey Lawson Sullivan.
He was a member of United Community Church of Spencer.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Mildred Sullivan and Iva Jean Madewell.
Survivors include his wife, Irene Blankenship Sullivan, of Spencer; daughters, Margie Harvey and husband James, Barbara Roses Bowler, all of Painesville, Ohio, and Joyce, of Oklahoma; sons, Clifton Stanley and wife Louise, of Willoughby, Ohio, Eric Sullivan, of Pikeville; 18 grandchildren; and one sister, Ella Oakes, … CONTINUED

9/10 All Star run comes to an end

Working the mound. Trenton Hodges appeared on the mound for at least one batter in each of the three state tournament games for the Sparta 9/10 All Stars. He picked up the lone win despite facing only one batter on Sunday.

Sparta’s 9/10 year old Little League All Star team won their first six games including their opener in the state tournament, but all that success came to an end with a pair of losses eliminating them from competition.

Cardiac Kids. Comeback Kids. Either of the previous two nicknames could be given to Sparta’s 9/10 year old Little League All Star team.
They seem to always battle back from a deficit and keep their fans in the middle of heart stopping action. Sunday’s opening round game in the state tournament being played in Lebanon was no different.

Warrior football schedule filled with area teams

The 2009 White County High School football schedule is somewhat of a blend of the present and the past for the Warrior football program.
The ten-game schedule that covers 11 late summer/fall weeks is as varied a schedule as the team has had in years. The realigning of districts left the Warriors with only four district games and six games to fill with non-district teams as opposed to the last few seasons where WCHS has had just three non-region dates.

Cookeville man dies after workout

Michael Hickey, 38, of Cookeville, died July 20, at White County Community Hospital after he quit breathing, at approximately 7 a.m., during a workout at the Sparta YMCA.
According to Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth, Hickey was working out with a partner at the YMCA when he reportedly became ill and quit breathing.
Personnel with White County Emergency Medical Services performed CPR on Hickey and transported him to WCCH, where he later died.
Guth said foul play is not suspected in the incident, but they began an investigation because the two men were alone, practicing jujitsu, when Hickey became ill.

One man seriously injured in head-on crash

A two-vehicle, head-on crash on Highway 70, near Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, July 20, at approximately 7:30 p.m., injured all three occupants of both vehicles, causing two juveniles to be sent to White County Community Hospital and an adult male to be transported by Life Force medical helicopter to Erlanger Hospital, in Chattanooga.
According to Trooper Kevin Ballew with Tennessee Highway Patrol, Jackie McGee, 40, of White County, was traveling west on Highway 70 and, for unknown reasons, crossed the center line, slamming head-on into a 1993 Jeep Cherokee, driven by a 16-year-old male.

$200,000 deficit possible for E-911

Legal counsel for White County E-911 Board of Directors spoke to the county legislative body Monday night with an appeal for restoring funding to the levels provided in 2001.

$44.6 million budget approved for county

White County commissioners have approved the new operating budget for the upcoming fiscal year that was carefully scrutinized to maintain funding at a level similar to 2008/2009.
The final vote was 12-2 in passage of the multi-million-dollar financial plan with the following appropriations:
•General fund, $9,032,539
•Local purpose, $303,000
•Drug control, $60,513
•Highways/public works, $4,415,353
•General debt service, $2,281,355
•Solid waste disposal, $1,398,903
•General purpose school, $25,114,440
•Central cafeteria, $1,948,612
Total appropriations for fiscal year 2009/2010 are $44,554,715. Last year’s appropriations were $44,676,047.

Woman injured in dog attack

Recuperating. Gretta DeMarco is back at her home in White County recuperating from injuries received in an attacked by a neighbor’s dog during her morning walk.

A 79-year-old White County woman was attacked July 20 by two dogs belonging to her neighbor while she was taking her usual morning walk on Vandy Circle in the Rimrock Mesa subdivision.
According to a report by Deputy Lanny Wheeler with White County Sheriff Department, a neighbor heard the screams of Gretta DeMarco as the dogs were attacking her.… CONTINUED

Bessie Lee Miller DeLaney

Bessie Lee Miller DeLaney, 94, of Roanoke, Va., formerly of Nashville and Sparta, passed away July 21, 2009, in Roanoke.
Mrs. DeLeney was born Jan. 22, 1915, to Charles E. Miller and Nancy (Nanny) A. Walker.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Floyd D. DeLaney; brothers, Benton, Burle, Louis and Fred Miller; and sisters, Ruth, Louise and Lila.
Survivors include her son, Robert S. DeLaney and wife Diane; sister, Reba; grandchildren, Scott DeRocher, Dineen Miller and husband Kee; one great-grandchild, Emily Goria; and several nieces and nephews.

Agnes Bohannon Goff

Agnes Bohannon Goff, 77, of Sparta, passed away July 21, 2009, at Alive Hospice, at St. Thomas Hospital, in Nashville.
Mrs. Goff was born May 27, 1932, in Sparta, to David and Cecil Elizabeth Bartlett Bohannon.
She was a retired employee of the White County Tax Assessor’s office and Register of Deeds’ office.
Mrs. Goff was preceded in death by her husband, Gene Goff, and a brother, Wesley Bohannon.
