Lloyd Albert Lawson

Lloyd Albert Lawson, 64, of Sparta, passed away at his residence Feb. 2, 2010.
Mr. Lawson was born March 11, 1945, in White County, to Edward lee and Rosha LaVon Manus Lawson.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Charlie, James and Horace Lawson, and one sister, Madieleen Dunn.
Survivors include two brothers, John Lawson and wife Beverly, Robert Lynn Lawson, all of Sparta, and two sisters, Betty Rice and husband Harold, Clara Lavon Holland, all of Sparta.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Feb. 4, 2010, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Bethlehem Cemetery. Dwight Fuqua will officiate. The family will receive friends 5-8 p.m., … CONTINUED

Darek Todd Kirby 1968-2010

Darek Todd Kirby, 41, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 31, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Kirby was born May 9, 1968, in Sparta, to H.L. and Norma Grace Frasier Kirby.
He was the operations superintendent for the Sparta Electric System. He was an avid hunter and golfer.
Survivors include his wife, Kelly Ann DelaPena Kirby, of Sparta; daughter, Katelyn Kimberlee Kirby, of Sparta; son, Hunter Jackson Kirby, of Sparta; granddaughter, Madelyn Jayde Bumbalough; parents, H.L. and Norma Kirby, of Sparta; and
sister, Aundrea Kirby, of Sparta.

Ollie Vera Roberts, 76, passed away Feb. 1, 2010, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Roberts was born Dec. 18, 1933, in White County, to Cecil and Daisy Davis Elliott.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband, Robert Eston Roberts.
Survivors include her six children, Robert Dennis Roberts, of Plymouth, Mich., Betty Grace Weldy, of Plymouth, Mich., Harold Dean Roberts, of Durand, Mich., Howard Lynn Roberts, of Cookeville, Danny Smith Roberts, of Cookeville, Justin Kent Roberts, of Durand, Mich.; 18 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marie Elliott, of Quebeck.

Helen Schattschneider

Helen Schattschneider, 85, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 23, 2010, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mrs. Schattschneider was born Oct. 30, 1924, in Cairo, Egypt, to Stavros and Evdoxia Tsitsimbidis Eliadis.
She was of the Greek Orthodox faith.
Mrs. Schattschneider grew up in Egypt, and at the age of 22 moved to the United States. She prided herself in being a “World War II bride.” She was a homemaker and taught language. She was fluent in Greek, Arabic, English and Italian.
Mrs. Schattschneider was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Roy Schattschneider; one brother, Dimitrius Eliadis; and three sisters, Maria Brown, Roxoula Ahlborn and Fanoula Baharis.

James Franklin Morris, 83, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 31, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Morris was born Feb. 12, 1926, in Van Buren County, to Lee and Flora Emerton Morris.
He was retired from Sparta Spoke Factory and a U.S. Army World War II veteran. He loved gardening and was an avid fisherman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Cecil Marie Rogers Morris; brothers, Lee Morris and Bill Morris; daughter, Tammy Lynn Morris; and son-in-law, Kenneth Ward.

Robert Forrest Rohelier

Robert Forrest Rohelier, 84, passed away Feb. 1, 2010, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mr. Rohelier was born Jan. 26, 1926, in Detroit, Mich., to William and Betsy White Rohelier.
He was of the Church of Christ faith and retired from Koppy Tool and Die, in Michigan. He was an avid fisherman, loved woodworking, and could repairman just about anything. He was a loving husband, cherished father and grandfather. He loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Gilbert Rohelier; a brother, Ralph Rohelier; and three sisters, Millie Rohelier, Mary Lee Gore and Laura Miller.

WCHS splits non-district games at Tullahoma

WCHS split a pair of non-district games at Tullahoma Monday night. Above Daniel Duke had to contend with the height of the Tullahoma inside game.

Despite the large amount of ice and snow over the weekend, the roads cleared and the WCHS teams were able to make their way to Tullahoma Monday for a non-district contest.
WCHS came home with a split for the evening. The Warriorettes defeated the Lady Wildcats 60-33 for their fifth straight win. WCHS, who got 16 points from senior post player, Jessica Wilson, improved to 14-9 overall.
The Warriors allowed 21 offensive rebounds by the Wildcats who used those extra touches to take … CONTINUED

Slate of candidates grows

More White Countians are tossing their hats into the ring for the May 4 and Aug. 5 elections.
The list is gradually growing each week as potential candidates secure their qualifying papers for the various offices on the ballot.
To qualify for a May 4, 2010, primary election held in the county, political party candidates nominated by petition and independent candidates must file their nominating petitions with the administrator of elections no later than noon, on Feb. 18, 2010. The deadline to withdraw from this election is noon, on Feb. 25, 2010.

Miller pleads ‘no contest’ to murder charges

According to Detective Chris Isom with White County Sheriff Department, Kenneth Miller, 35, of Hermitage, Tenn., pled no contest to Facilitation of 2nd Degree Murder in White County court, on Jan. 27, for his role in the murder of 33-year old Oulay Chantharack.
Isom stated, in the plea, Miller acknowledged his involvement in conspiring to murder Chantharack over a drug deal gone bad.
Chantharack’s body was found with no identification near Post Oak Bridge, between Highway 111 and Roberts-Matthews Highway, in the northern portion of White County nearly five years ago, in Dec. 2005.
