Alderman wants to combine services

A city alderman’s request to delay hiring an animal control officer until the board could meet in a work session and discuss the possibility of combining those services with the county was voted down Thursday.
“It seems the amount of money that we’re paying for this – the total budgeted amount – after speaking with the county executive and the commissioners, I believe it’s going to be a money-saving situation for the county and city,” said Young.
Young said he had also spoken with the county’s animal control officer who reportedly “assured” him “this would be no problem.”
“He’d be working under two different regulations,” said Pedigo.

Sparta Cookeville to meet for District 6AAA title tonight

The Warriorettes take on Cookeville Monday night for the District 6AAA championship.

For the first time in five years, the Warriorettes find themselves back in a spot they dominated during the 90’s – the district tournament championship game.
The Warriorettes earned the slot in the title game with a 48-29 victory over Cumberland County in Saturday’s semifinal game at Warren County High School.
The last time the Warriorettes won the tourney title was back in 1998. That championship ended a string of nine straight for Sparta’s girls. This group of seniors was in kindergarten the last time the female title was brought back to Sparta. Then the trophy … CONTINUED

Aubrey Sims and the Warriorettes are headed to the District 6AAA title game after their 48-29 win over Cumberland County in the semifinals.

The Warriors dropped a 45-39 overtime game to Cumberland County falling into the consolation game.

The White County High School Warriorettes earned their first trip in five years to the district tournament championship game with a 48-29 win over Cumberland County Saturday in the semifinals.
The Warriorettes got 11 points each from Jessica Wilson and Brittany Dodson earning the title game trip for the first time since 2005. WCHS dropped Cumberland County into the consolation game with the victory in Saturday’s first 6AAA semifinal game … CONTINUED

School schedule adjusted because of weather

District Attorney appointed to governor’s council

Randy York, district attorney general for the 13th Judicial District, which includes White County, has been appointed to the Governor’s Criminal Justice Coordinating Council.
York, along with 12 other individuals who were appointed by the governor, will collaborate with and coordinate the services of state and local government agencies and non-governmental entities in the criminal justice system to increase public safety.
The Council is the recommendation of a group of stakeholders in the criminal justice system that began meeting informally in November 2007. The group made its recommendation to the Governor in September 2009 that a permanent Council be appointed.

Earl Sherwood Bannister

Earl Sherwood Bannister, 60, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 17, 2010, at the White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Bannister was born Dec. 16, 1949, in Baltimore, Md., to James and Betty Johnson Bannister.
Survivors include his wife, Sarah Bannister, of Sparta; daughter, Sara Beth Hamlett and husband Mark, of Murfreesboro; grandchildren, Nicholas and Aiden Hamlett; sister, Barbara Womack of Charleston, W.Va.; brother, Bernard Bannister, of Charleston, W.Va.; uncle, Sherman Johnson, of West Virginia; aunt, Virginia Turner, of Baltimore, Md.; and several nieces and nephews.

The Warriors and Warriorettes open District 6AAA tournament play Saturday.

The regular seasons are in the books for high school basketball teams across the state of Tennessee.
Everything they have done up to this point has been all geared toward being prepared for what lies ahead. It’s time for the postseason and it all begins with the district tournament. Each team’s goal is to make it to the campus of Middle Tennessee State University in March with the ultimate goal of being the last one standing and grab the gold ball at the end. Chris Edward Lane, 51, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 15, 2010.
Mr. Lane was born March 10, 1958, in Richmond, Va.
He had been a truck driver.
Survivors include two daughters, Shannon Maracle and husband Joey, Jennifer Moody and husband Jonathan, all of Sparta; son, Darek Lane, of Sparta, parents, Laurence and Jean Walton Lane, of Sparta; brother, Laurence H. When it’s all said and done, one person has a big impact on sports – Mother Nature and she ruled with an iron fist as the week began.
Yet another snowfall across the midstate brought sporting activities across the Upper Cumberland to a halt on Monday.
The snow prevented the Warrior and Warriorette senior basketball players from being honored on senior night as Monday’s final regular season game against Lebanon was postponed until Tuesday. Jimmy Dillard Forsythe Sr., 68, of Spencer, passed away Feb. 17, 2010, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Forsythe was born May 22, 1941, in Spencer, to Lloyd and Elizabeth Blanton Forsythe.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Feb. 20, 2010, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Spencer Town Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1-9 p.m., Feb. 19, at the funeral home, and 8 a.m. until time for the service, on Feb. 20, at the funeral home.

Sarah Janie Haston Price, 75, of Sparta, passed away Feb.18, 2010 at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Price was born March 6, 1934, in Overton County, to Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Haston.
She was the loving wife of Thurman Price for 45 years and 19 days and was a retired shirt factory worker. Mrs. Price was a member of Macedonia The Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her adopted parents, Clora and Elijah Johnson; brothers, Alfred and Billy Haston; and step-daughter Claudine Price Guilbault.
