Sarah Janie Haston Price, 75, of Sparta, passed away Feb.18, 2010 at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Price was born March 6, 1934, in Overton County, to Mr. and Mrs. Thurman Haston.
She was the loving wife of Thurman Price for 45 years and 19 days and was a retired shirt factory worker. Mrs. Price was a member of Macedonia The Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her adopted parents, Clora and Elijah Johnson; brothers, Alfred and Billy Haston; and step-daughter Claudine Price Guilbault.
Survivors include her husband, Thurman Price, of Sparta; son, Tommy Price, of Sparta; grandson, Eli Price, of Sparta; sister, Grace Beaty, of … CONTINUED


Jimmy Dillard Forsythe Sr.

Jimmy Dillard Forsythe Sr., 68, of Spencer, passed away Feb. 17, 2010, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Forsythe was born May 22, 1941, in Spencer, to Lloyd and Elizabeth Blanton Forsythe.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Feb. 20, 2010, at Spencer Funeral Home, with burial in Spencer Town Cemetery. The family will receive friends 1-9 p.m., Feb. 19, at the funeral home, and 8 a.m. until time for the service, on Feb. 20, at the funeral home.
Spencer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Chris Edward Lane

Chris Edward Lane, 51, of Sparta, passed away Feb. 15, 2010.
Mr. Jones was born March 10, 1958, in Richmond, Va.
He had been a truck driver.
Survivors include two daughters, Shannon Maracle and husband Joey, Jennifer Moody and husband Jonathan, all of Sparta; son, Darek Lane, of Sparta, parents, Laurence and Jean Walton Lane, of Sparta; brother, Laurence H. Lane, of Jacksonville, Fla.; two sisters, Lee Ann Ferraro and husband Arthur, of Baxter, Lisa Ferraro and husband James, of Sparta; grandmother, Emily Lane, of Interlachen, Fla.; and grandchildren, Austin Rogers, Jared Moody, Jolie Maracle, Emily Moody, Jacalyn Maracle and Kya Lane.

White County/Lebanon basketball game cancelled

The basketball game with Lebanon that had been rescheduled from Monday to Tuesday has now been cancelled.
The weather cancellation officially brings to an end the 2009-10 regular season.  The next action for WCHS will be Saturday in the District 6AAA Tournament in McMinnville.  The Warriorettes will take on the winner of Thursday’s play-in game at 3 p.m. in Saturday’s opening game.  The Warriors will take on either Cumberland County or Warren County at 7:30 p.m. also on Saturday.


Aaron Ray Shafer

Aaron Ray Shafer, 36, of Walling, passed away Feb. 13, 2010, at Erlanger Medical Center, in Chattanooga.
Mr. Shafer was born Sept. 23, 1973, in Vallejo, Calif., to Raymond and Jeannie Owen Shafer.
He was the owner of Pluto’s Hot Dogs and Shafer’s Home Inspection Co. He was a member of the National Association of Home Inspectors, was on the Board of Directors for Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce. He attended Findlay Church of Christ.

Even the gentleman who writes the Democratic column in this very paper can’t seem to call for bipartisanship and an end to political bantering without slipping one in himself. Sparta businessman dies after Friday head-on crash

UPDATE @ 9:30 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13
Aaron Shafer was pronounced dead at approximately 6:15 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13, 2010, according to his mother Jeannie. Doctors performed a blood-flow test and determined there was no blood flowing to his brain. The family has chosen to donate Aaron’s organs. Please keep the Shafer family in your prayers. Monday’s basketball game rescheduled to Tuesday

The snow that accumulated quickly in the early morning hours has postponed tonight’s (Monday, February 15th) basketball game between WCHS and Lebanon to Tuesday night.
The tip time has been moved up to 6 p.m.  Both junior varsity games have been cancelled.  Plans are to still honor the WCHS senior players and cheerleaders prior to the start of the girls’ games.  Senior night activities will begin at 5 p.m.  The elementary school teams will still be honored at halftime of each game.


Warriors avenge loss to Pioneers

The Warriors avenged their loss at home to Warren County with a 68-55 defeat of the Pioneers spoiling their senior night.
WCHS (7-17, 4-4) got 26 points from junior guard Josh Turner on the strength of six treys in the contest. Turner seemed to have the answer for every Pioneer threat.
Turner was aided in the scoring column by Devon Davidson’s 17 points and 16 from Daniel Duke.
Warren County (5-18, 3-4) was hit with three technicals in the game including a near altercation as the third quarter … CONTINUED


Warriorettes regular season district champs

The inaugural season in District 6AAA has turned out much to the Warriorettes liking.
With a 44-42 win over Warren County Friday night in McMinnville, the Warriorettes of Coach Bryan Haley captured the first 6AAA regular season title for White County High School. The regular season title was the first for the Warriorettes since the 2003-04 season and only their second since 1998, which was the end of a string of 11 consecutive.
