Electric rates to rise

Based on results of a detailed cost-of-service study completed by an engineering firm, a small amount of additional revenue is needed to maintain the financial integrity of Sparta Electric System and to meet projected expenditures.
During last week’s meeting of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen, members were presented with a rate change recommendation for Sparta Electric System. Patterson and Dewar Engineers had provided a PowerPoint presentation about the need for the increase during a work session scheduled for the board on March 18, 2010.
According to the study, an overall 1.1 percent rate increase was recommended for an additional annual revenue of $111,507. This increase is to … CONTINUED


One killed in single-vehicle crash

Rollover. The driver of the truck in the ditch was ejected from the vehicle after he lost control, went down an embankment and rolled over. A witness to the crash stated the truck fishtailed, which caused the trailer behind it to also fishtail.

A Cookeville man was killed Apr. 6 in a one-vehicle crash on Ditty Road, in the northwestern portion of White County.
According to Lt. R.C. Christian with Tennessee Highway Patrol, Jimmy W. Keisling, 56, was traveling northbound on Ditty Road in a silver 2008 GMC Sierra pickup truck, pulling a lift trailer loaded with shingles.

Dollar General begins construction in Cassville

New store. Work has started on a new Dollar General store to be located in White County, just west of LTD Parts. Planners estimate the store should be open in approximately three months.

Earthwork has begun on a new Dollar General store in the Cassville community, just west of LTD Parts, according to a representative with Turner and Associates Realty in Nashville.
“We did purchase that land from Mr. (Terry) Howard and we are under construction,” said Angela Heering with Turner and Associates Realty, the preferred developer and owner of the property.
Heering stated the store is estimated to be open within three months.

One critically injured in Tuesday crash

Serious injuries. This 1994 Chevrolet four-door Geo ended up in the southeast corner of the intersection of Smithville Highway and Old Kentucky Road on Apr. 6. It was ‘t-boned’ after pulling into the path of the black pickup truck seen in the background.

Warrior baseball runs win steak to six

The Warrior baseball team continued their winning ways to start the week adding wins five and six in the streak.
The Warriors opened the week with a 21-4 romp at Monterey on Monday and then overcame a 4-0 deficit to pick up their sixth straight victory with the 14-4 win over Marion County on Tuesday in Sparta.… CONTINUED


WCHS soccer defeated by Livingston

The White County High School soccer team hosted Livingston Monday in hopes of picking up their first win of the season.
That, however, was not to be as the Wildcats turned a 2-1 halftime lead into a 5-1 victory dropping the Warriors to 0-3-4 on the season.
Livingston would never trail in the contest jumping to a 2-0 advantage with a pair of goals in the first 21 minutes of the game.

WCHS softball falls in 10-inning thriller

The Warriorettes were, however, defeated 8-7 in 10 innings by the Lady Pioneers in a District 6AAA thriller. WCHS plays in the Plateau Classic in Crossville this weekend.

Monday spring sports update

Three of the White County High School spring sports teams were in action on Monday.
The Warrior baseball team traveled to Monterey and picked up their fifth straight win with a 21-4 romp over the host Wildcats. WCHS will be looking to make it six in a row when Marion County visits Tuesday.
The Warriorette softball team dropped a District 6AAA thriller at Warren County. Seven innings were not enough to decide the outcome. The teams went into extra innings tied at three. … CONTINUED


General Election forums sponsored by Expositor

A big political year for Sparta and White County brings questions of what each candidate will bring to his or her respective office if elected to that position.
The Expositor will be sponsoring four political forums, in June, to help the public become more familiar with the candidates in the Aug. 5 General Election and their individual platforms.
The official deadline for candidates in the General Election was April 1.
However, candidates in the Democratic Primary will also be provided with opportunities to meet and greet the public. At least two forums have been announced for those on the May 4 ballot.

No injuries reported in near head-on crash

The use of seatbelts and the quick reaction of a passenger are credited for avoiding a much more serious outcome in a near head-on crash, at approximately 6:30 p.m., Mar. 30, on Crossville Highway.
According to Trooper Ronnie Hale with Tennessee Highway Patrol, Dennis Williams, of Florida, was a passenger in a black 2000 Nissan Altima, being driven by Jamie Clifton Wood, 31, of Sparta.
Hale stated Wood is believed to have suffered a medical issue behind the wheel, causing him to cross over the centerline.
Williams reportedly grabbed the wheel at the last second and was able to avoid a direct, head-on collision with a black 2004 … CONTINUED


Farley homerun lifts Warriors to fourth straight win
