Barbara Ann Kirby, 73, of Sparta passed away May 20, 2010, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Kirby was born March 31, 1937, in Harlan County, Ky., to Oddie V. and Mary Farmer Shoupe.
Funeral service will be 1 p.m., May 23, 2010, at Oak Lawn Funeral Home, with burial in Glade Creek Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4-7 p.m., May 22, at the funeral home.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Nelson David Grady Wilkey

Nelson David Grady Wilkey, 52, of Sparta, passed away May 21, 2010, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Wilkey was born July 11, 1957, in New Burgh, N.Y.
He had served in the U.S. Navy and had been employed at S & S Precision, in Sparta.
Survivors include his wife, Delorise Wilkey, of Sparta; two daughter, Mary Rose, of Sparta, Tiffany Wilkey, of Murfreesboro; two sons, Nelson Wilkey, of Sparta, Christopher Moore, of Sparta; mother, Elizabeth O’Dell, of Sparta; two brothers, Jody O’Dell, Danny O’Dell, both of Sparta; sister, Candy Wilkey; and seven grandchildren.

Doyle residents’ input needed

Contemplating. Member of the Doyle Board of Mayor and Aldermen consider their options as they work to make the City of Doyle a safer, more pleasant place to live.

In an effort to continue beautification efforts in the city, the Doyle Board of Mayor and Alderman are seeking input of Doyle residents to best decide how to proceed.
The Board is developing a plan to assist residents in painting their homes and hope residents will contact Doyle City Hall to express the level of interest in the project.
Board members discussed offering free paint so residents could spruce up their homes.

House and horse trailer damaged by flames

Aftermath. This burned out horse trailer sits directly in front of a shed that was destroyed by fire after a May 16 incident on McMinnville Highway.

Four volunteer fire departments were dispatched to a residence on McMinnville Highway, at approximately 12:34 a.m., on May 16, where they found a home, a shed and a horse trailer on fire.
According to E-911 records, Deputy James Elliott with White County Sheriff Department noticed the fire and called for firefighters.
Firefighters with Doyle Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to the scene.
Mt. Gilead, Central View and Hickory Valley volunteer fire departments also responded to lend mutual aid with the blazes.

Grand jury requests funding for jail

A report issued to White County Board of Commissioners from the grand jury denotes a request that is not a usual part of its quarterly inspection of the jail facilities.
Part of the responsibilities of the White County Grand Jury is to inspect the jail and provide a report to the county commission that states the condition of the structure, as well as any problems that might exist within the justice center that need to be addressed by the legislative body.

Freddie (Fred) Ray Jones

Freddie (Fred) R. Jones, 82, passed away May 18, 2010, at DeKalb Community Hospital, in Smithville, Tn.
Mr. Jones was born Dec. 11, 1927, in DeKalb County, to Charlie Waymon and Mary Alice Elrod Jones.
He served in the U.S. Army and worked with Bridge Builders Corporation.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Marrie Kortley and Sarah “Linda” Smith; two brothers, Rex D. Jones, Ralph E. Jones; and a niece, Tommie Marie Smith.

Robert Earl Parker, 65, of Sparta, passed away May 18, 2010, at his residence.
Mr. Parker was born Dec. 6, 1945, in White County, to Waymon Clay and Gusta Parker.
He had been employee at Middle Tennessee Natural Gas and retired after 41 years of service.
