WCHS advances three in tennis semifinals

To the semifinals. Megan James, in her final tournament for WCHS, advanced to the semifinals of the 6AAA individual tournament.

After being ousted in the team portion of the District 6AAA tennis tournament, WCHS had six boys and six girls competing in the individual segment of the tournament.
WCHS had three advance into the semifinals of the tournament earning top four finishes.
Megan James, a senior, drew Ashleigh Blanton from Coffee County in the first round and defeated her in three sets (6-2, 0-6, 6-4). She followed that with a second round win (6-3, 7-5). She was defeated in the semifinals by Daphne Ermanis.

Warriorettes finish runner-up in 6AAA meet

After having to wait 48 hours to compete, the Warriorette track and field team brought home runner-up honors from the District 6AAA track meet on Thursday.
The Warriorettes edged archrival Cookeville by 3.5 points for the second spot in the meet. Coffee County captured both the boys’ and girls’ titles in the event. The Warriors finished third behind the host, Raiders, and Cookeville.
Chelsea Baca, a sophomore, paced the Warriorettes with three first place finishes and a runner-up spot while freshman … CONTINUED

Child abuse victim speaks at ‘Blue Ribbon’ ceremony

No injuries reported in two-vehicle crash

This S-10 pickup truck struck the Nissan in the front quarter panel.

A two-vehicle crash on Old Kentucky Road, on Apr. 29, at approximately 2:44 p.m., caused severe damage to both vehicles but reportedly left the occupants uninjured.
According to Deputy James Elliott with White County Sheriff Department, a white Nissan car was attempting to pull into a driveway, just north of Central View Market.
A green S-10 pickup truck reportedly passed another vehicle in a passing zone and struck the Nissan in the right front quarter panel.

One student slightly injured in school bus crash

This school bus was damaged when it slid into a guardrail at White County High School.

One juvenile White County student was reported to have suffered minor injuries when a school bus struck a guardrail at White County High School, at approximately 3:15 p.m., on Apr. 25.
According to Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth, Larry Dean (Bubba) Johnson, 44, was driving bus #12, a 1994 Bluebird, taking 54 students home after school.
Guth stated, as Johnson was negotiating a sharp downhill curve beside the tennis courts, the bus began to slide toward the guardrail.
Johnson reportedly attempted to steer the bus to avoid hitting the guardrail head on.… CONTINUED

Carolyn Lou Gibbs Williams Doney

Carolyn Lou Gibbs Williams Doney, 60, of Sparta, passed away May 2, 2010, at White County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Doney was born Oct. 12, 1949, in Sparta to Henry Lloyd and Edna Novella Miller Gibbs.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Johnny Gibbs.
Survivors include her husband, Charles Doney, of Sparta; children, James Williams, Charles Williams, Lloyd Williams, Billy Williams and wife Tammy, all of Sparta; six grandchildren; and brothers and sisters, Jenny Gibbs, Alvin Gibbs, Edith Driver, Tommy Gibbs and wife Kathy, and Bobby Gibbs and wife Ellen

Darrell Lee Sternes

In honor and remembrance of service to his country.

Darrell Lee Sternes, 68, of Sparta, passed away April 30, 2010.
Mr. Sternes was born Aug. 24, 1941, in Decatur, Ill., to Glenn and Marjane Tarr Sternes.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked as an over-the-road truck driver.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three children; and three grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Linda Sternes, of Sparta; daughter, Tracy Dawson and husband Buddy, of Elkton, Md.; two sons, Kurtis Sternes and wife Gwen, of Wilmington, Del., Keith Sternes and wife Jen, of Ocoee, Fla.; daughter, Nikki Miller and husband John, of Sparta; 11 … CONTINUED

Donna K. Cole

Donna K. Cole, 52, of Sparta, passed away April 30, 2010, at her residence.
Ms. Cole was born June 6, 1957, in Detroit, Mich., to Anna Lee Tollison Cole and Ridley E. Cole.
She had been employed as an assembly worker at Federal Mogul.
Ms. Cole was preceded in death by her father.
Survivors include her mother, Anna Lee Cole, of Sparta; brother, Jerry D. Cole, of Sparta; niece, Amanda Cole, of Sparta; nephew, Jeremiah Cole, of Sparta; two nieces, Lakota Cole, Sarah Cole, both of Sparta; and an aunt, Helen Stoglin, of Sparta.
