Walling man arrested on explosives charge

Mitchell Dibrell Bain

Mitchell Dibrell Bain, 50, of Walling, was arrested, on Mar. 4, in connection with a pipe bomb found, on Feb. 14, at US Bank on Highway 111, in Sparta.
Bain faces a Class B felony prohibited weapons charge for allegedly making and transporting the pipe bomb, according to Detective Chris Isom with White County Sheriff Department.
Isom stated, on Feb. 14, a female employee of a business located in the US Bank facility, found a package, took it to the business, and called Detective Ruben Hormilla with WCSD.

Edna Earle White, 80, of Sparta, passed away March 2, 2011, at the NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Ms. White was born May 5, 1930, in Hamilton County, to Benjamin Harrison White and Lillie Jewell Prince White.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Carolyn Oakwood.
She was retired from Cooper Industries, a member of the Faith Baptist Church and had a great love for music.
Survivors include her sister, Catherine Cantrell, of Sparta; two brothers, Ben White, of Sparta, Alfred White, of Braxton, Miss.; six nephews; and three nieces.

James Lee Speck, 69, of Sparta, passed away March 3, 2011, at his home.
Mr. Speck was born Dec. 14, 1941, in Rutherford County, to John Shirley and Mattie Lee Webb Speck.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Shirley Johnson; and brother, Ray Speck.
Mr. Speck was a retired truck driver.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Geer Speck, of Sparta; two daughters, Lori Clouse and husband David, of Sparta, Christie Birdwell and husband Glenn, of Sparta; grandchildren, Kristin Sparks and husband Brian, James Clouse and wife Courtney, Rebecca Simmons and husband David; six great-grandchildren;

Martha Wrenn Horton, 89, of Sparta, passed away March 2, 2011, at Vanderbilt Medical Center, in Nashville.
Ms. Horton was born March 29, 1921, in White County, to Jeptha Vinum and Minnie Knowles Horton.
She was a retired timekeeper at Sparta Shirt Factory and White County librarian.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother John V. Horton; and sister Frances M. Haston.
Survivors include two nieces, Bettye Sauls and husband Jennings, of Sparta, Angela Ellis, of Colorado; four great-nieces; one great-nephew; seven great-great nephews; one great-great- niece; two great-great-great nephews; and one great-great-great niece

Bid awarded for sewer and water lines install

The long-debated issue about installation of sewer lines at Airport Industrial Park is one step closer to reality with the recent recommendation to award the contract to the lowest bidder.
G. Meeks Construction LLC has awarded the contract with a base bide of $684,187.
According to minutes from Feb. 22, 2011, meeting of the Industrial Park Advisory Committee, 17 companies submitted bids for the project.
Ronnie Reece, engineer in charge of the project, said he would have a project manager on-site daily to review the progress of the installation.


Sheriff requests funding for meth lab clean-up

White County’s sheriff appeared before commissioners during a Feb. 28 meeting to ask for funding to clean up chemicals found at the sites of meth labs.
Sheriff Oddie Shoupe stated the Drug Enforcement Agency had recently ceased funding this process, which has left every state in the same predicament. (See related story in the Feb. 24, 2011, edition of The Expositor.)

Man injured in Craigrock fire

One man was injured in a fire at Craigrock Circle while he was reportedly using paint thinner to remove glue from the floor in the vicinity of a gas water heater.

A Sparta man received 2nd and 3rd degree burns, on Feb. 25, during a fire at a residence on Craigrock Circle.
The man was reportedly using paint thinner to remove glue on the floor near a closet that contained a gas water heater.
Firefighters were dispatched, at approximately 7:10 p.m., and Lt. Corey Guy, who was the first to arrive, found smoke coming from the building.
