Grand Jury report spurs tour of jail

Juveniles injured in one-vehicle crash

Injuries. Law enforcement officials examine the pickup truck carrying two White County juveniles, who were injured in a single-vehicle crash on Jerry Parker Road in the western portion of the county.

A 17-year-old male driver and his juvenile male passenger, both of White County, were injured in a single-vehicle crash, on Sept. 19, when their vehicle struck a mailbox and two trees on Jerry Parker Road, in the western portion of White County.
According to Trooper David Hickey with Tennessee Highway Patrol, the juvenile driver was traveling northbound on Jerry Parker Road, also known as Old Smithville Highway North, in a blue Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck.

WCMS football blanked by Algood

The White County Middle School Warrior football team found the going tough for the second consecutive week.
This week, the Warriors stepped outside of Central Tennessee Conference action and traveled just a few miles north to Algood to take on the undefeated Redskins. Algood scored on the opening kick and never looked back on the way to the 28-0 victory.

Reba Lois Bohannon

Reba Lois Bohannon, 80, of Greenville, Texas, passed away Sept.19, 2011 at her home.
Mrs. Bohannon was born June 4, 1931, in Sparta, to Beecher and Daily Bumbalough.
She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church. She was a seamstress and loved spending time with her loving family.
Mrs. Bohannon was preceded in death by her son, Danny B. Bohannon, and grandson, Ty B. Bohannon.
Survivors include her daughter, Connie Bohannon, of Greenville, Texas; adopted daughters, Marsha Nave, of Greenville, Deborah Blevins of Greenville, Texas; and several nieces and nephews. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

Warriorettes are District 6AAA Champions

Capt. Edmund Bartholem Mahinske

Capt. Edmund Bartholem Mahinske, 88, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 21, 2011, at White County Community Hospital.
Capt. Mahinske was born March 3, 1923, in Fairmont, Ohio. He served as a U.S. Navy captain, specializing in electronics. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Sparta.
Survivors include his wife, Ruscelle Mahinske, of Sparta; daughter, Crigell Sequin, of Centerville, Va.; son, Dwayne Mahinske, of Springfield, Va.; stepdaughters, Kimberly Keller Saylor, of St. Petersburg, Fla., Karin Magmusson, of Burnsville, Minn.; stepson, Donald Wayne Keller, of Idaho; and three step-grandchildren, Rachel Saylor, Benjamin Saylor and Jakob Magmusson.

Warriors host Wildcats for homecoming

Soccer shut out by Stone Memorial

After having their game against Cookeville scheduled for Monday postponed yet again because of rain, the Warriorette soccer team was back in action Tuesday against Stone Memorial.
The Lady Panthers proved ungracious visitors as they outscored WCHS 3-0 in the non-district contest.
Stone broke the scoreless tie in the 13th minute of the game. That 1-0 lead would last all the way until the half.

Abuse, drug and theft charges filed against 37-year-old man

Charles Howard Young, 37, faces multiple charges after a burglary investigation led officers to 519 Ballard Lane where he shared a residence with his elderly grandmother.
White County Detective Jacob Groce and other White County officers, as well as Putnam County Detective David Gibbons, executed the search warrant, on Sept. 7, 2011, and reportedly found Young, his grandmother and another female in the residence.

City and Chamber issues still unsettled

Sparta-White County Chamber of Commerce is continuing to operate on a tight budget after the mayor restated the city’s stance on withholding funding because of the organization’s president serving in a dual role that is reportedly causing a conflict.
During the Sept. 12, 2011, meeting of the Chamber Board, Sparta Mayor Jeff Young and Chamber Board members once again discussed the issues existing between the city and the Chamber.
A point of contention for city officials has been that Wallace Austin, Chamber president, also serves as a county commissioner. A majority of the members of Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen had previously voted to withhold the city’s … CONTINUED
