WCHS hoops picks up two wins on opening night

24 Fit opening in Sparta later this month

24 Fit opening soon. Mark Frasier and his wife, Tricia, are opening a fitness center that will be open 24 hours per day, seven days a week. The center, located on Mose Drive, will open November 28th.

If finding time to work out and stay in shape is a problem, something new is opening in Sparta that may be just the answer to those hindrances.

WCHS basketball opens at Soddy Daisy Tuesday

The White County High School basketball season gets underway Tuesday night when the Warriors and Warriorettes travel to Soddy Daisy for a Hall of Fame game.

|J.D. Turner, 83, of Sparta, passed away Nov. 11, 2011, at White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Turner was born Nov. 30, 1927, to Erman Turner and Rebeka Roberts Turner.
Survivors include his companion, Beatrice Lack, of Sparta; children, Gary Turner, of Tecumseh, Okla., Perry Turner, of Shawnee, Okla., Jerry Turner, of Columbus Ohio, Sherry Goonan of Miamisburg, Ohio, Terry Gentry of Angola, Ind.; two sisters, Arizona Turner, Mammie Turner; 12 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren
Funeral service will be 10 a.m., Nov. 22, 2011, at Hunter Funeral Home, with burial in Pollard Cemetery. The family will receive friends 8:30-10 a.m., Nov. 22, at the funeral home.

Franklin Delano “Pee Wee” Selby, 74, of Sparta, passed Nov. 12, 2011 at his home.
Mr. Selby was born April 8, 1937, in White County, to Odie Lee and Alta Pearl Judd Selby.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Juanita Joan McDonald Selby; and sister, Hazel Canary.
Mr. Selby was a US Navy veteran and retired employee of Tennessee Department of Transportation.

Frank Baxter Coburn, 50, of Sparta passed away Nov. 12, 2011, at his home.
Mr. Coburn was born May 27, 1961, in Knoxville, to James Minton Coburn and Mary Irene Price Coburn.
He was preceded in death by his father, James Minton Coburn, and brother Randy Coburn.
Mr. Coburn was a teacher and US Air Force veteran.
Survivors include two daughters, Kelly and Katie Coburn, of Louisiana; one son, James Coburn, of Louisiana; mother, Mary Irene Price Coburn, of Murfreesboro; and two sisters, Jamie Coburn, of Sparta, Mary Sue Fowler, of Mt. Juliet.

Martha Louena Adcock, 72, of Walling, passed away Nov. 13, 2011, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mrs. Adcock was born Sept. 21, 1939, in White County, to Jesse and Ersa Edmonds Cope.
She was a housewife.
Mrs. Adcock was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Verble Cope.
Survivors include her husband, Dean Adcock, of Walling; two daughters, Brigette Rice and husband Todd, of Sparta, Kim Dockery, of Sparta; brothers and sisters, Faye, Wayne, Steve, Brenda, Rena, Maxie, Jeanette; and four grandchildren, Alyssa Rice, Bronson Rice, Madison Dockery and Allison Dockery.

Nathan Joseph Huckile Trower, 29, of Baxter, passed away Nov. 11, 2011, as the result of an auto accident.
Mr. Trower was born June 17, 1982, in Mattoon, Ill., to Velma Mason Arendall and Larry Huckile.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Hailey Lemmons, and two grandfathers, Earl Mason and Earl Hines.

Mr. Layne was born Feb.12, 1940, in Grundy County, to Simon Peter Layne and Florence Prater Layne.

Two killed in Friday afternoon crash

Two men died in this crash that occurred Nov. 11, 2011, on Old Smithville Highway. Both men were traveling in the 1995 Pontiac Firebird. The woman who was driving the pickup reportedly suffered serious injuries.

Two men died in a Nov. 11, 2011, crash in the western portion of White County after the vehicle in which they were traveling reportedly crossed into the oncoming lane of traffic.
According to the report from Tennessee Highway Patrol, Jimmy Luna, born in 1968, was driving a 1995 Pontiac Firebird and traveling west on Old Smithville Highway, at approximately 12:30 p.m., Nov. 11. Reportedly, Luna traveled off the right side of the … CONTINUED


Oct. tax revenues decrease

White County’s state and local sales tax collection figures for October 2011 have dropped from the previous month’s totals.
According to Tennessee Department of Revenue, White County reported $1,086,300 in state sales tax collections for October 2011, which was a $23,915 drop from September 2011. Local sales tax collections in October totaled $303,148, a drop of $21,697 from September 2011.
October 2011’s numbers are also lower than the figures in October 2010, when state sales tax collections were $1,069,990 ands local sales tax collections were $291,893.
Statewide, revenue collections for October 2011 were 8 percent higher than October 2010.
October collections were $36.4 million more than the budgeted … CONTINUED
