Oscar Thomas Bowman

Oscar Thomas Bowman, 54, of Cookeville, passed away Jan. 25, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Bowman was born Nov. 6, 1957, in Nashville, to Willard Brockette Bowman and Loretta Arlene Shoemaker Bowman Brown.
He was a veteran of United States Army National Guard where he served six years.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Eve Bowker Bowman, of Cookeville; daughters, Misty Nicole Bowman, Tonya Arlene Van Ness, of Rickman; step-children, Debora Graham, of Baxter, Stephen Graham, of Jacksonville, Fla.; brother, Rick Bowman and wife Judy, of Rickman; sister, Pamala Whitehead, of Cookeville; half-brother, Darryle Brown, of Smithville; and three grandchildren.

Floyd ropes title and drives away in new truck

To the victor goes the spoils. Greg Floyd, pictured above with wife, Ashley, and their children Halle and Blaine, competed in the Music City Madness team roping event on January 14th and 15th in Franklin and came home with the grand prize, the Dodge dually. Floyd also won the saddle and other prizes.

Greg Floyd earns a living for his family by driving a big brown truck delivering packages for UPS.
That’s what he does by day, but whenever he gets an opportunity, he trades in the brown uniform of UPS for cowboy attire and trades in the delivery truck for his horse, Buster, and spends his free … CONTINUED


Dewey Stanley Simmons

Dewey Stanley Simmons, 68, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 28, 2012, at his home.
Mr. Simmons was born Dec. 23, 1943, in White County, to Dewey Harvel and Margie Wallace Simmons.
Survivors include his wife, Bernice Jones Simmons, of Sparta; two daughters, Candie and Carrie Simmons, both of Sparta; two brothers, Cecil Simmons, of Doyle, Neil Simmons, of Smyrna;
Sister, Joann Tolbert, of Crossville; brother-in-law, Mike Tallent, of Sparta; and nephew, Mikey Tallent, of Sparta.
Funeral service will be graveside at 11 a.m., Jan. 30, 2012, at Old Bon Air Cemetery. Dewey Young will officiate.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.


Mildred Selby Cox

Mildred Selby Cox, 88, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 28, 2012, at NHC Healthcare of Cookeville.
Mrs. Cox was born Nov. 2, 1923, in White County, to Jimmie Lee Selby and Lula Deann Sparks Selby.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George Thomas Cox; brothers, John Selby, Herbert Selby, Ernest Selby, James Selby; and sisters, Alta England, Verda Burgess, Ura Eller and Gladys Dillard.

Fire Committee reviewing funding and countywide department

A decline in manpower and the need for more funding has precipitated a serious discussion among county officials and firefighters about how to solve these issues.
Matt McBride, a county commissioner and a fulltime firefighter for City of Sparta, said volunteerism is declining in the fire service. He attributed the problem to the generation gap. He said many of the people involved in fire service, in White County, range in age from approximately 35 years old to 65. The number of volunteers below the age of 35 is declining.

Maude Elsie England Mott, 80 of Quebeck, passed away Jan. 26, 2012, at White County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Mott was born Sept. 23, 1931, in White County, to John Edger and Minnie Belle Shelby England.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Willie “Bill” Mott; three brothers; and five sisters.
Survivors include her daughter Lynda Null and husband Bobby, of Quebeck; granddaughter, Terri Dolin and husband George, of Sparta; three great-grandchildren, Jessica Dolin, Tyler Dolin, Lyndsea Hutchings; one great-great-grandchild, Bella Denton; sister, Jewell Hoffman; special friend, Fred Howell Jr.; and several other relatives, nieces and nephews.

Donald Lee “Don” Johnson

Donald Lee “Don” Johnson, 69, of Sparta, went to be with the Lord, on Jan. 26, 2012.
Mr. Johnson was born March 7, 1942, to Edna Hawley and T.J. Johnson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Thomas “Butch” Johnson.
Mr. Johnson was the minister of Athens Church of Christ for 27 years. He coached Little League baseball and softball for more than 20 years as well as Junior Pro basketball. He served in the Tennessee National Guard for 22 years and drove a truck many years for Robert Agee Oil Company.

David John Gesing, 44, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 23, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Gesing was born Aug. 9, 1967, in Detroit, Mich., to John Joseph Gesing and Sherry Vanhorn Gesing.
He had been a welder.
Mr. Gesing was preceded in death by his mother and a brother, John Gesing Jr.

Norman Arthur Hiller

Norman Arthur Hiller, 82, of Spring Hill, formerly of Sparta, passed away Jan. 23, 2012, at Vanderbilt Medical Center.
Mr. Hiller served in the U.S. Army and was a retired shift supervisor with Dow Chemical Company.
He was preceded in death by parents, Anthony and Clara Hutzley Hiller; wife of 56 years, Catherine R. Hiller; and seven siblings.
Survivors include his twin brother, Raymond Hiller and wife Gaylene, of Spring Hill, and niece, Ellen Murdock and husband Dale, of Sparta.
No local services will be held. Entombment will be in Bellevue Memorial Park, Ontario, Calif., at a later date.
