David John Gesing, 44, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 23, 2012, at his residence.
Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Jan. 27, 2012, at North Sparta Church of God, with burial in Highland Cemetery. The family will receive friends after 5 p.m., Jan. 26, at the church.
Hunter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Kenneth Ray Jolly, 72, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 22, 2012, at White County Community Hospital.
Mr. Jolly was born Oct. 29, 1939, in Overton County, to Earl Paul and Kathleen Bilbrey Jolly.
He was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany, and a member of Findlay Methodist Church. He was a retired White County educator and basketball coach.
Mr. Jolly was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Earline Graham.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy Simpson Jolly, daughter,

Willie Ruth Edwards Prater, 77 of Walling, passed away Jan. 21, 2012, at the White County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Prater was born July 5, 1934, in Erwin, to Claude Estil and Letha Helen Stanton Edwards.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chester Paul Prater; and four brothers, Gary, Jackie, D.A. and Junior Edwards.

William T. “Bill” Morgan, 72, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 22, 2012, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Morgan was born Feb. 15, 1939, in Cookeville, to Edward Morgan and Veleda Netherton Bennett.
He was retired owner of Morgan Furniture and TV.
Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ella Mae Thurman Morgan.
Survivors include his daughter her and spouse, Kim Morgan and Phillip E. White, of Brentwood, and two grandchildren, Morgan White and Sydney White, both of Brentwood.

Home school students may be eligible to play sports

Students who are home/ schooled in Tennessee may soon be allowed to participate in extracurricular athletics if legislators pass a bill that was introduced last week.
According to Senate Bill 2180, home school students could take part in athletics at the public school to which he or she would be assigned or authorized to attend, according to the Local Education Agency, if the following guidelines are followed.
(1) The student is enrolled in a home school conducted by the student’s parent or legal guardian;

White County residents are encouraged to take part in the “Get Fit Highlands Challenge” beginning Feb. 1 and continuing through May 25. For more information call Sparta YMCA at 836-3330.

Residents of White County are being urged to get fit this winter and spring with the Get Fit Highlands Challenge.
The Get Fit Challenge is a friendly competition for area businesses and organizations that encourages any kind of physical activity for a minimum of 30 minutes per day, five days per week. Everyone who signs up to participate will receive a free two-week membership to the YMCA to help kick-start their workouts.

Help needed for White County homeless count

The Upper Cumberland Continuum of Care will be participating in a Homeless Point-in Time Count on Tues., Jan. 24 at noon through Wed., Jan. 25 at noon. Kim England, Point-in-Time Captain for White County will be responsible for gathering and reporting White County’s homeless population for this 24-hour time frame.

Curtiss defends his stance on Thursday vote

Tennessee House of Representatives voted Thursday to amend the Tennessee Constitution by adding language to ban a state income tax.
SJR0221 is a Constitutional amendment that “explicitly prohibits the general assembly from levying, authorizing or otherwise permitting any state or local tax upon payroll or earned personal income or any state or local tax measured by payroll or earned personal income.”

A murder case that has remained unsolved for three years and left a family with many unanswered questions is still being aggressively investigated, according to District Attorney General Randy York.
York spoke with The Expositor, on Jan. 20, 2012, about the third-year anniversary of the murder of Terry Sullivan, of White County. Sullivan was found murdered in his Gillen Subdivision home, in Sparta, on Jan. 16, 2009. To-date, no one has been charged with his death.
