Martha Lou Geer Williams

Martha Lou Geer Williams, 93, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 21, 2012, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Mrs. Williams was born Feb. 7, 1918, in White County, to Erastus and Lillie Randolph Geer.
She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Lonnie Williams, R.V. Williams; two brothers Thomas Geer, Wesley Geer; and two sisters, Alice Manus and Mary McCann.
Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Wilson and husband Roger, Lucy Manus and husband Tom, all of Sparta; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Billy Manus, Eddie Manus, Nathan Whiteaker, Cameron Sims, Matthew Williams, Levi Sims and Tommy Manus.

William T. “Bill” Morgan

William T. “Bill” Morgan, 72, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 22, 2012, at Cookeville Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Morgan was born Feb. 15, 1939, in Cookeville, to Edward Morgan and Veleda Netherton Bennett.
He was retired owner of Morgan Furniture and TV.
Mr. Morgan was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Ella Mae Thurman Morgan.
Survivors include his daughter her and spouse, Kim Morgan and Phillip E. White, of Brentwood, and two grandchildren, Morgan White and Sydney White, both of Brentwood.

Willie Ruth Edwards Prater

Willie Ruth Edwards Prater, 77 of Walling, passed away Jan. 21, 2012, at the White County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Prater was born July 5, 1934, in Erwin, to Claude Estil and Letha Helen Stanton Edwards.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Chester Paul Prater; and four brothers, Gary, Jackie, D.A. and Junior Edwards.

Warriorettes hold off Lady Cavs for 55-48 win

Maneuvering around the defense. WCHS point guard, Allyson Quillen, maneuvers her way around the Cookeville defense to make a pass. Quillen tallied 14 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals in the win over the Lady Cavaliers.

In front of a packed house, the White County High School Warriorettes held off a late surging Lady Cavalier team for the 55-48 win and stayed perfect in District 6AAA action.
The Warriorettes (8-14) are still trying to get above .500 in the overall record, but the most important thing right now is they are 3-0 with one game remaining in the first half of the district race.

Jolly Harper joins father on wall of fame at WCHS

Newest member of the Hall of Fame. Kellie Jolly Harper stands alongside her banner on the wall, which is beside that of her dad. Harper was inducted into the WCHS Hall of Fame during Friday’s games with Cookeville.

In a gym where she scored a ton of points and dominated the competition, current North Carolina State women’s head basketball coach, Kellie Jolly Harper, stood at center court with a packed house on their feet applauding all the success she has enjoyed in her career.

Stellar high school career. Kellie Jolly was a dominant force on the court during her high school playing days. The 1995 graduate scored 1,548 points and helped guide the Warriorettes to 111 wins.

Point guard for three national titles. Winning is something Kellie Jolly Harper has always done. Nothing represents that more than the three national titles she was a part of while playing for the Tennessee Lady Volunteers.

From almost the time she entered this world, Kellie Jolly Harper was destined to be a member of the White County High School Sports Hall of Fame.

Oscar Keith Graham, 75, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 19, 2012, at Masters Healthcare, in Algood.
Mr. Graham was born Nov. 4, 1936, in White County, to Luther and Sarah Almira Ray Graham.
He was a retired UPS driver.
Mr. Graham was preceded death by his first wife, Johnnye Sue Cunningham Graham, and brother, Perry Graham.

Gordon David Frazier, 73, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 18, 2012, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mr. Frazier was born Feb. 7, 1938, in Bonnie Blue, Va., to Thomas Leslie and Lorene Rachel Payne Frasier.
He was retired from Mallory and a U.S. Navy veteran.
Mr. Frazier was preceded in death by his sisters, Lois Hensley and Janice Frasier.

Billie Jean Clouse

Billie Jean Clouse, 78, of Sparta, passed away Jan. 19, 2012, at White County Community Hospital.
Mrs. Clouse was born Aug. 20, 1933, in Putnam County, to Bessie Mae Bumbalough and William Victor Walker.
She worked as a certified nursing assistant at NHC Healthcare of Sparta for 24 years. She was a member of Findlay Church of Christ, a member of the International Society of Poets and former member of the Findlay Home Demonstration Club.

Fire destroys residence

Smoke still rises from the remains of the Mack Floyd Road home that was destroyed by fire on Jan. 16.

On Monday, Jan. 16 at approximately 3 p.m., Cherry Creek Volunteer Fire Department responded to a fire at 1585 Mack Floyd Road. When firefighters arrived, the fire was already fully engulfed.
Jessie Buttrum, assistant chief of the Cherry Creek VFD, was first on the scene and said that the home, owned by John and Misty Poteet, was a total loss.
Buttrum also stated that the cause of the fire is undetermined at this time.
Josh Poteet suffered some burns but refused hospitalization.

White Co. sales tax collection figures down for December

December 2011 ranked the third lowest month for state sales tax collections and the fourth lowest in local sales tax collections for White County.
The highest state sales tax collections for 2011, in White County, was in January, with $1,234,236.
State sales tax collections for White County fluctuated between January 2011 and June 2011. In July, the numbers increased. However, the figures steadily declined between August and December.
The highest local sales tax collections for 2011 was also listed in January, with $331,821. February and March showed a drop, with $238,820 and $256,633, respectively. Then, April’s numbers jumped to $303,510, followed by a rise and fall pattern from … CONTINUED
