Undercover drug purchase lands three in jail

After an undercover drug purchase by detectives with the White County Sheriff Department, three Sparta residents were arrested on Feb. 17 on several charges involving the sale of prescription drugs.
Detectives Craig Capps and Joey Williams reportedly received information that drugs were being sold at the residence of Melissa Ann Newton, 43, her boyfriend Randall Alfred Mansfield, 32, and her son Kurtis Scott Newton, 20, on McMinnville Highway.
The detectives had also reportedly received information that Melissa Newton may have been issuing fraudulent prescriptions for narcotics from Walling Dental Center, where she was employed.

41 arrested in ‘Operation Pill Head’

ARRESTED. US Marshals escort in several suspects who then have their handcuffs removed by White County correction officers so they can be searched and processed before being taken to White County Justice Center.

White County Sheriff Department coordinated a major drug roundup titled “Operation Pill Head, Keep Tuned – More to Come” with the aid of 12 other agencies that netted 41 arrests early Wednesday morning.
The operation began around 6 a.m. at the National Guard Armory where all the agencies gathered to execute the organized hunt for 51 individuals who were facing a total of 72 charges in White County.

Daughter gives father gift of life

DUO. Jim Shanks and his daughter, Sara, will have an even closer bond after Feb. 28, when Sara will donate a kidney to her father.

A White County teen is getting ready for a once-in-a-lifetime “event” that will hopefully ensure the longevity of a man who has been an integral part of her life since the day she was born.
Sara Shanks, 18, will enter Vanderbilt University Hospital, on Feb. 28, 2012, along with her father, Jim Shanks. Sara will be donating one of her kidneys to her dad.

Little League hit with $17,000 in theft and damages

The White County Little League Baseball Board and Sparta Police are seeking information on the theft of six sets of bleachers and vandalism of the concession stand from the Little League Ball Park.
According to Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth, three sets of bleachers were reported missing on Jan. 23. Between Jan. 23 and Feb. 13, three more sets of bleachers were stolen. The Little League board had initially believed that the bleachers were being borrowed but they were never returned and more sets were disappearing, which lead the board to believe that the bleachers had been stolen.

Previewing the Region 3AAA hoops tournament

Both White County High School teams will be competing in the Region 3AAA tournament which begins this weekend.
Both teams will be shooting for at least two wins which would earn them a trip to the substate. A region championship gives the team a big boost by earning a home game in the substate.
The semifinals and finals of the Region 3AAA tournament will be played at Cumberland County High School. The quarterfinal games are played at the site of the higher seeded teams. The first two rounds of the tournament are elimination games meaning losses in the quarterfinals or semifinals end a team’s seasons. The top two … CONTINUED

Warriorettes are District 6AAA champions!

District 6AAA champions! The Warriorettes captured the title in the District 6AAA championship game Monday night in Crossville. They defeated Coffee County 44-37.

For the first time in 14 seasons, the Warriorette basketball team can be called District Champions.
There are no ties, no co-champions or any of the sort. The White County High School girls’ basketball team is the 2012 District 6AAA tournament champions. This is their first title since joining 6AAA and the first tournament … CONTINUED

Synthetic drug violators will have beer permits revoked

City officials have officially approved an ordinance that will allow Sparta Beer Board to revoke an individual’s beer license if he/she is charged with the sale of synthetic drugs.
Sparta Board of Mayor and Aldermen unanimously approved the new law during its Feb. 16, 2012, meeting. The synthetic drug issue has been one of the hot topics in the law enforcement arena for the past couple of years, with City of Sparta experiencing an incident with one of its businesses that ultimately led to the passage of this ordinance.
