Marcum named W.C. finance director

White County has a new finance director after final deliberations on Sept. 5 that took a little more than two hours.
Members of White County Financial Management Committee had conducted interviews Sept. 4 with 12 finalists out of 19 applicants. On Sept. 5, the number had been narrowed to three: Robert Apple, of Sparta, Robert Scarbrough, of Crossville, and Chad Marcum, of Sparta.
According to Paul Bailey, chairman of WCFMC, the vote was unanimous for Marcum.

Krystal closing doors Saturday

A popular fast-food restaurant that has been in operation since 2001 will be permanently locking its doors effective Sept. 8, 2012.
According to Doug Benningfield, the Krystal franchise in Sparta that he co-owns with Robert Agee will be shutting down business because of a significant decrease in revenue during the past four years.
Sparta’s Krystal opened Nov. 14, 2001, at the corner of Clark’s Mill Drive and West Bockman Way.
Benningfield said the downturn in the economy has drastically impacted the eatery.
“Our business grew a little bit steadily through 2008,” he said. “By the conclusion of 2008, it had started a pretty rapid decline.”

Melvin C. Lumbardy

Melvin C. Lumbardy, 85, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 4, 2012.
Mr. Lumbardy was born Jan. 10, 1927, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Melvin and Lois Lumbardy.
As a young child he lived in Wheeler, Ind., and Hamlet, Ind. He graduated from Wheeler High School and married his married his first love, Patricia G. Lumbardy, both in 1947.
Patricia sadly passed away, in 1985, after a courageous six- month battle with cancer.
He proudly served in the U.S. Navy, 1947-1967. He was stationed with his family in Greencove Springs, Fla.; Milwaukee, Wis.; Hobart, Ind.; and Coronado, Calif. Some of the ships he was on included USS Pine … CONTINUED

Carl Lloyd Copeland

Carl Lloyd Copeland, 72, of Beechmont, Ky., formerly of Sparta, passed away Sept. 5, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Copeland was born Sept. 26, 1939, in Sparta, to Clayton and Vallie Milligan Copeland.
Survivors include his son, Tim Copeland and wife Donna, of Sparta; daughter, Susan Roberts and husband Jeff, of Decatur, Ala.; stepson, Wesley Miller and wife Erika, of Beechmont, Ky.; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside service will be 3 p.m., Sept. 7, 2012, at Copeland Chapel Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Sept. 6, at Tucker Funeral Home, in Beechmont, Ky.
Oak Lawn Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Sarah “Annette” Pawloski

Sarah “Annette” England Pawloski, 63 of Bourbonnais, Ill., passed peacefully on Sept. 4, 2012, at Provena St. Mary’s Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Pawloski was born Dec. 28, 1948, in Sparta, Tenn., the daughter of Walter P. and Anna Mae Thompson England.
She moved to Joliet, Ill., in 1966, and settled in Bourbonnais, marrying Mark M. Pawloski, in 1971.
She retired from Borg Warner Automotive, in Frankfort, Ill., after 35 years of service.
Mrs. Pawloski preceded in death by her parents; her former husband, Mark Pawloski; her son-in-law, Don Goodrich; her grandson, Phillip Goodrich; and her best friend and aunt, Kathleen Seals.

WCMS football bounces back from 3OT loss

The White County Middle School football team bounced back from their triple overtime loss last week with a 36-20 win over Tullahoma back in Sparta on Tuesday.
Five different players scored touchdowns for WCMS as they improved to 3-1 overall and 2-1 in Central Tennessee Conference play.

Warriors looking to tame Tiger football machine

Need a big defensive performance. DeKalb County has scored 157 points in three games thus far this season. The Warrior defense will be looking for a way to slow down the high scoring Tigers when they visit Dee Harris Field Friday night. Game time is set for 7 p.m.

The White County High School Warrior football team is still in search of their first win of the season and in order to accomplish that, they must tame a DeKalb County Tiger team that comes in riding a wave of dominating wins.

Wilkerson logs another golf tournament win

Another tourney win. A.J. Wilkerson, pictured above with WCHS golf coach, Eric Mitchell, shot a 73 Tuesday and tied for first in the Keith Maxwell Invitational tournament played at the McMinnville Country Club.

If Tuesday’s play at the Keith Maxwell Invitational Golf Tournament is any indication, Monday’s District 6AAA tournament could go right down to the wire.
The Maxwell Invitational was played at the McMinnville Country Club, which will be the site of the district tournament this year. All five of the District 6AAA teams competed in the event. Volleyball falls to Upperman

The Warriorette volleyball team fell to 2-9 on the season when they were defeated 3-0 by Upperman in Sparta on Tuesday.
WCHS got off to a solid start early in the first game of the match, but saw Upperman regroup and win that game plus the next two.
The Warriorettes got on the board first behind a solid serve from Sydney Holman. After the Lady Bees tied the score at one, Sparta reeled off six consecutive points to jump out to the 7-1 lead. Upperman then … CONTINUED
