Bye week just in time for Warriors

After a grueling first six weeks of their football season, the Warrior football team is enjoying their bye week this Friday before heading into the final four-game stretch of the season.
WCHS has posted a 1-5 mark in their first six games, but have endured injuries, sickness and some pretty good football teams including two that are ranked in the top 10 of the latest Class 4A Associated Pres poll.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day on September 29

Sparta Police Department and Walgreens are partnering to take part in the Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Sept. 29 for residents to safely dispose of their expired or unused prescriptions.
The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in a tent in the front of Walgreens located at 483 West Bockman Way.
Police officers will be on hand to receive and weigh the medications. The Drug Enforcement Agency will take the medications that have been dropped off to an incinerator to safely dispose of them.

UCHRA audit reveals misuse of public funds

A second governmental funded organization that has been under scrutiny during the past several months has officially been declared by Tennessee’s comptroller as “squandering” taxpayer funds.
According to a statement released by Justin P. Wilson, state comptroller, on Sept. 25, 2012, Upper Cumberland Human Resource Agency officials spent almost $60,000 an annual trip to Washington D.C., more than $1.6 million to subsidize its training complex and resort property, $123,000 for gift certificates for training events, more than $100,000 annually on 160 mobile communication devices for employees and thousands of dollars for extravagant meals.

THP releases results of mobile truck inspections

The Tennessee Highway Patrol has released a report of the vehicles inspected using the new Mobile Inspection Station on Sept. 21.
The vehicle came to White County to test the safety of large trucks traveling on Highway 111 that are carrying heavy and potentially dangerous cargo as the county has seen an increase in the number of commercial vehicle crashes.
According to a report by Sgt. Kent Norris, 44 full inspections were performed. 14 driver-only inspections were performed.
A total of 17 vehicles, approximately 39 percent, were considered to be out of service. According to Capt. R.C. Christian, this means that the vehicle had mechanical defects that posed … CONTINUED


Police department wins new vehicle

Sparta Police Chief Jeff Guth and Patrolman David Grissom show off the department’s new 2012 Chevy Tahoe, valued at $50,000, that is fully equipped for police duties. Only three of these Tahoes were given away by the Governor’s Highway Office. Guth says this will be used on the road by the officers and not as an administrative vehicle. Elaynie C. McDaniel, 71, of Crossville, passed away Sept. 26, 2012, at NHC Healthcare of Sparta.
Funeral arrangements are incomplete at this time.

Kaylee Leann Elaine Williams, 8, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 23, 2012, at Highlands Medical Center, in Sparta.
Kaylee was born March 29, 2004, in White County, to Jessica Ann Williams Rittenberry and Matthew Ira Lewis.
She was a third grade student at Woodland Park Elementary. She has had a lifelong battle with illness, and the family wishes to thank the teachers and staff of Woodland Park and the nurses of CareAll for their love and support to Kaylee.
She is survived by her mother and stepfather, Jessica Williams Rittenberry and Danny, of Sparta; father and stepmother,

WCHS golfers in thick of things at state

4-over. A.J. Wilkerson shot a 4-over during the first 18 holes of the TSSAA state golf tournament. His 76 on the day left him in a tie for 31st place with 18 to play.

The top high school golfers in the state gathered at Willowbrook Golf Club on a beautiful, but slightly windy fall day in Manchester for the TSSAA Class AAA state golf tournament.
After playing their practice round on Monday, the action was real on Tuesday as each played an 18-hole round.

Hazardous Waste Day set for Sept. 29

All counties in Tennessee manage their own trash and recycling, with the exception of hazardous waste, which is disposed of through Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation.
On Sept. 29, 2012, 8 a.m.-1 p.m., at Putnam County Fairgrounds, Tennessee’s Hazardous Waste Collection Day for Putnam and surrounding counties will take place. Past events only collected household waste. This year, by appointment only, businesses can recycle their hazardous waste as well.
Appointments may be made by calling (931) 537-3278. Paint and electronics will not be accepted.

Fence destroyed during crash

On Friday afternoon, Sparta Police responded to a crash on the corner of West College and North Church streets at the residence of Pinkie Tubb Hill, across from First United Methodist Church, where a red SUV crashed through the wrought iron fence at Hill’s residence, traveled through the lawn, and crashed through the fence again onto West College Street.


Drug and firearms arrests made after Sept. 13 traffic stop

When law enforcement stopped a truck in Sparta city limits for driving erratically, a search of the vehicle turned up methamphetamine, paraphernalia, guns and illegal weapons, and led to the arrest of two Sparta residents.
On Sept. 13, 2012, Sgt. Daniel Trivette, of White County Sheriff Department, initiated a traffic stop on East Bockman Way, after he witnessed a vehicle with expired tags reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed and crossing into oncoming traffic.
