John Thomas Eskew

John Thomas Eskew, 75, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 14, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Eskew was born Oct. 8, 1936, in Carmel, Ind., the son of Orlie and Fannie Boyd Eskew.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. Mr Eskew was a member of the VFW, AmVets and the American Legion.
Mr. Eskee was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Bonnie Eskew.
Survivors include his wife, Lynda Eskew, of Sparta; son, Phillip Eskew and wife Dawn, of Sparta; sister, Phyllis Grizzle and husband Glen, of Lebanon, Ind.; grandchildren, Coty, Amber, Shaun, Erin and Dale; great grandson, Brett Garrison; nieces and nephews, … CONTINUED

Melisa Sue Rich Loutfi

A service to celebrate the life of Melisa Sue Rich Loutfi, 51, was Sept. 23, 2012, at First Baptist Church, 308 N. Spring Street in Sparta.
Interment was in Highland Cemetery, in Sparta, with Hunter Funeral Home of Sparta in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Loutfi graduated from this temporal world Sept. 18, 2012, after many months of valiant struggle. She was a joy and inspiration to many who saw her walk out the last steps of her path.
Blind since January 2011 and facing a mortal cancer, she tackled Braille and a cane to continue in her strong work ethic and zest for a fulfilling a life. Often … CONTINUED

WCMS football gets shut out win at Celina

Protecting the QB. The White County Middle School offensive line protects quarterback, Pierce Whited, and gives him time to throw downfield for one of his completions during the 22-0 win over Celina Tuesday night. The Jr. Warriors are now 4-2 on the season with two games remaining.

When the original schedules came out to start the season, the White County Middle School Warrior football team was to be idle this week.

Warriors take on state’s 5th ranked team Friday

Raising helmets on first win. The Warriors are coming off their first victory of the season, a 12-7 win at Coffee County, and will need the momentum from that game as they travel to Livingston Friday night to take on the Wildcats, who are ranked number five in the state in Class 4A. Kick off is slated for 7 p.m.

Having already played two teams that were ranked at the time the Warrior football team played them, that schedule gets even rougher this Friday when WCHS travels to Livingston to take on the state’s fifth ranked Class 4A team.

Vehicular assault charges filed in Nov. 2011 crash

After a November 2011 crash left an 8-year-old child injured, White County Grand Jury indicted Jeffery Wayne Wilson, of Sparta, for vehicular assault, and Trooper Kevin Ballew of the Tennessee Highway Patrol arrested him Sept. 10, 2012.
According to Ballew, the crash occurred when Wilson reportedly crossed the centerline and hit another vehicle head-on near Wheat’s Curve, on McMinnville Highway.
Ballew said an 8-year-old child was seriously injured in the crash and is still recovering from those injuries 10 months later.
While there was no alcohol in Wilson’s system, other substances were reportedly detected in a blood test.

$500,000 grant is awarded to Sparta

Sparta has been named as one of the recipients of a Community Development Block Grant from Tennessee Department of Economic and Community Development.
The $500,000 will be used for sewer system improvements
Other cities that will benefit from this round of grants include Alexandria, Algood, Lafayette, McMinnville, South Carthage and Westmoreland.
“Community Development Block Grants allow communities to complete projects that will ultimately lay the groundwork for future economic development opportunities,” Gov. Bill Haslam said.
Haslam said CDBG’s have a huge impact on rural communities where Tennessee faces some of its biggest challenges in economic development.

EMS director named

After several months of indecision and failure to approve the county executive’s recommendations for director of White County Emergency Medical Services, commissioners voted Monday night in favor of Billy Price, a longtime EMS employee and paramedic to fill the position that was vacated in April 2012 with the retirement of Ron Bennett.
The final decision to hire Price was made during the Sept. 17, 2012, meeting of White County Board of Commissioners.
Price had met with commissioners Sept 10, 2012, during the meetings of Steering Committee A and Steering Committee B.

Senator’s field director visits Findlay

Jane Jolley, area field director for Senator Bob Corker, visited Findlay Elementary fourth and fifth grade students on September 19 and spoke to them about the importance of the Constitution. Jolley made a half-hour presentation in which she described why and how the framers of the Constitution created the document. The enthusiastic students have been studying the Constitution and were ready for Jolley’s visit. Jolley said that Findlay students, who were able to answer every trivia question Jolley presented to them, were “one of the sharpest groups I have ever spoken too.” Members of the Daughters of the American Revolution were also present to hear Jolley speak. WCHS student organizing race for Clean Water Fund

Giving back. Megan Holland, a WCHS freshman who runs cross country, has organized the Light in the Dark 5k race for September 28th. She will donate all proceeds to the Clean Water Fund.

Megan Holland is a freshman at White County High School and a member of the school’s cross country team.
In addition to her school studies, her training for the cross country team and her involvement with her church’s youth group, Holland has decided to undertake a new endeavor.

Charlie Lowe

Charlie Lowe, 69, of Sparta, passed away Sept. 17, 2012, at Life Care Center of Sparta.
Mr. Lowe was born April 3, 1943, in Putnam County, to Luther and Bertha Louella Cooley Lowe.
He worked more than 30 years for White County Highway Department.
Mr. Lowe was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Paul Eugene Lowe; brother J.W. Lowe; and stepdaughter, Sabrina Wright.
Survivors include four children and spouses, Elaine and Phil Swack, of Doyle, Charlene “Cricket” and Larry Kerr, of Doyle; Chuck Lowe, of Sparta, Charlie Barry Lowe and Dora, of Sparta;

Joe Nathan Looney

Joe Nathan Looney, 70 of Sparta, passed away Sept. 18, 2012, at his residence.
Mr. Looney was born Feb. 4, 1942, in Walling, te Roy Nathan and Frances Russell Looney.
He was a retired bridge builder.
Mr. Looney was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Dr. George Russell Looney.
Survivors include two sons, Joey Looney, of Buffalo Valley, Jonathan Looney, of Sparta; grandchildren, Parker Looney, Jonathan Looney, Alexandria Looney; sisters, Lorena McKay, Sarah Dodson, both of Sparta; and special great-nephew, Richard Milton.
